THE SUFI IN SAFFRON POLITICS
Hans Raj Hans says never heard India, Pak fought in 1971

"Mujhe yaad nahi, main us waqt chotta tha."

S PAL

PADAM SHRI Hans Raj Hans of the BJP, who is now on his way to become a lawmaker of India, has no idea that the country ever fought a war against Pakistan in 1971, or that Bangladesh was ever a part of Pakistan.

"Mujhe yaad nahi, main us waqt chotta tha (I do not remember, I was a kid at that time)," Hans told a Hindi news channel in a live show.

When asked if he knows who was India's Prime Minister in 1971, Hans Raj Hans, the sufi singer and BJP's candidate from North West Delhi seat, expressed complete ignorance.
-----------
"Sir, aap ko pata hai 1971 mein Pakistan ke saath larayee huyi thee Bharat ki?
"Mujhe yaad nahi, main us waqt chotta tha”
-----------
Hans, who was given a ticket after sacrificing Udit Raj, made a complete fool of himself in the live television interview when the News 24 channel anchor Sakshi Joshi cornered him and asked if the BJP was taking such credit for striking back at Pakistan, then what is his view about the 1971 vivisection of Pakistan.

A clearly clueless Hans retorted by asking when did that happen, and laughed at what he thought was a ridiculous suggestion, not rooted in any fact.

"Pehle to sir Pakistan ke do tukde ho gaye the, 1971 mein. Aap keh rahe hain pehle aisa nahi huya," the anchor said. Hans reacted shockingly, and asked, "Achha ji? Kaun se tukde huye the? Kis ne kiye the?"

Now, the anchor had to leave her line of questioning and tried educating Hans Raj Hans about post-Independence Indian political history in 12 seconds, clearly a daunting task if the student has not heard of the 1971 war.
-----------
"Sir, aap ko yaad hai us waqt desh ka pardhan mantri kaun tha?”
"Mujhe zayada nahi pata."
-----------
After he was told that Pakistan was broken into two in 1971 and a country called Bangladesh came into being, and was asked if he would give credit to the then rulers for it, Hans said, "Bilkul credit lena chahiye. Agar achha kaam kiya hai kisi ne to us ki sarahna karni chahiye. Mujhe nahi pata."

It was only now that the anchor realised the full extent of Hans' ignorance, but she decided to double check: "Sir, aap ko pata hai 1971 mein Pakistan ke saath larayee huyi thee Bharat ki? (Do you know India fought a war against Pakistan in 1971?"

Here is Hans' response: "Main us waqt chhota tha, lekin huyee hogi. Mujhe yaad nahi, main us waqt chotta tha... Meri umar us waqt zayada nahi thee. (I was little then, but it could have happened. I do not remember, I was too little at that time.")

Now, the anchor really wanted to double check: "Sir, aap ko yaad hai us waqt desh ka pardhan mantri kaun tha?

By now, Hans had been chastened suitably: "Mujhe zayada nahi pata."

Then the anchor solemnly started teaching Hans in seven seconds a crisp "History 101 for the Infantile” course and told him what had happened in 1971. A rather grateful and sobered Hans, who was by now regretting he ever came on to the show, thanked her after listening to the lesson and said, "Okay... Good...Yeh bahut achha kaam kiya jo tukde kar diye.
-----------
Hans is a widely travelled man, having enjoyed sojourns in the Akali Dal and the Congress, and is now in the BJP. At one point in his life, he became a ‘peer’ of a dera.
-----------
It is not clear if he realised that the young television anchor who was telling her who was it who really did tukde of Pakistan had made a mincemeat of him on live television for a national audience and made him a 'hero' of a 2 minute 18 seconds long viral movie.

Hans is a widely travelled man, having enjoyed sojourns in the Akali Dal and then in the Congress, and is now in the BJP, though he did flirt with the AAP for a little while but the deal did not come through. At one point in his life, he became a ‘peer’ of a dera, and it is this twist in his career that has led to allegations that Hans converted to Islam. Now, Hans has said he worships Valmiki and that his mother "would have killed me had I converted to Islam.” (Punjab Today could not find any evidence that Hans’ mother was so full of hatred towards Muslims that could have killed her own son for making a choice of free will guaranteed under the Constitution. – Ed.)

Hans also revealed his deal with the Congress and said the party had promised him a Rajya Sabha seat. "Inho ne mere se paanch-saat maheene campaign karvayee...but the day nominations were to be filed, they dropped my name.. jhoothe log hain, mujhe ditch kiya.

Little did he realise that he was revealing a deal with the Congress and was merely complaining about breach of contract, not of any political or ideological difference with the Congress.

Elsewhere in the same interview, Hans said he finds the word Dalit a term of abuse. "Dalit ya Harijan shabad mujhe gaali ki tarah lagta hai. Jis ne bhee rakha hoga, pata nahi kyon rakha hoga," he said.

But then, he may not really know who coined a word like Harijan, or what the social currency of a term like Dalit is. You see he was either very small then, or wasn't even around. He may even get confused between a Mahatma or a Nathuram Godse. God knows who's who, since Hans Raj Hans, in his own words, is a mere "Rab da banda," a description not to be confused with God's own fool.

Christian maamla hai, Christian reporter hai, sab pak-saaf hai!

NDTV IS HAPPY that it has assigned a Christian reporter to cover a scandal involving the church! A top Christian leader tells the anchor that since your reporter is herself a Christian, so she is naturally above board and outside the purview of any allegation.

Now, what should one presume about all the Hindu reporters covering affairs concerning Muslims? Is it a practice with the NDTV to assign reporters for stories based on their religious affiliations?

Listen to what Dr Abraham Mathai, President of the Indian Christian Voice, tells the NDTV anchor:  "She being a Christian, there cannot be an allegation against her in the first place."

We are just presuming that he was referring to the possibility of a bias on her part in reporting this particular story, but we may too short-sighted. It is well nigh possible that the NDTV was receiving a compliment for having a Christian reporter who, being a Christian, was eternally immune to any kind of allegations.

The anchor did not even put up a fig leaf of an objection, and the reporter seems only too happy to gulp such a compliment. The rest of the reporters can carry their own cross.

Sikh Preacher Dhadrianwala speaks about sarkari school. Katha-vachaks need to move beyond, talk politics.

THIS IS WELL KNOWN Sikh preacher, Bhai Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale, speaking in village Jhunir of Mansa district on April 13.

It is good to see a kathavachak, a preacher speaking about the politics of private schools and government-run schools. He seems cued in very well, and gave the example of Rattoke's government-run school.

The teacher couple he referred to are Ms Renu Singla and her husband Surinder Bansal, both known for their remarkable level of dedication. There are other equally inspired teachers in that school as well as in scores of government schools.

Our katha-vachaks, ragis, granthis can play a huge role if they explain the state of affairs in which the masses find themselves from the view point of Gurbani, which talks about an egalitarian world and universal welfare. Sarbat Da Bhala.

All women and men of religion must do so.

If they did so, then they would be talking about governments running away from their primary duty of providing for education, health and safety and security. Then they would put to shame the caste-based matrimonials and conspicuous consumption in the face of utter poverty and hunger.

Bhai Dhadrianwale was speaking in Jhunir, Mansa. This area is the hub of Punjab's farm suicides. In fact, in that very village have occurred a number of such tragic cases.

Kirti is dying. His kirt is not being rewarded. Bhai Dhadrianwale has done the right thing. But the katha-vachaks need to go much beyond.

Remember, Guru Nanak had directly named Babur. Paap ki janj lai... Never shy away from talking politics. This is real people's fight.

And the teachers at Rattoke, well done. You deserve it.
