Amarinder launches book 'Prince, Patron and Patriarch Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala'

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday released the book 'Prince, Patron and Patriarch Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala', co-authored by the Maharaja’s grandson, Brigadier (Retd) Jagjit Singh, and Cynthia Frederick.

Besides the authors, Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore was also present on the occasion, which saw the Chief Minister hail the Maharaja as one of the scripters of modernization of Kapurthala. He recalled how his own grandfather Bhupinder Singh, along with Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, brought Patiala and Kapurthala on the world map through modernization.

Describing the book as a candid tribute by a grandson to the erstwhile exceptional royal king of Kapurthala, the Chief Minister regaled the august audience with anecdotes showcasing the far-sightedness of the Maharaja, whom he recalled meeting once as a 6-year-old, and the valour of his grandson, Brigadier Jagjit Singh.

The 1920s and the 1930s were Europe’s golden years, and some of the Indian rulers visited the region to see what they could bring back to Punjab for the state’s betterment, he added. His family association with Maharaja Jagatjit Singh went back 12 generations, said the Chief Minister, adding that the book went beyond a narration of historical facts to give a new perspective to the golden era.

Captain Amarinder spoke highly about Brigadier sukhjit Singh, and read out a para from the book recognizing the valour displayed by Brig Sukhjit in the 1971 Indo Pak war for which he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. The Chief Minister spoke about Jagjit Singh’s inspirational leadership on the battlefield, where he used his skills and courage to lead an operation to capture enemy tanks at Malakpur under heavy artillery and mortar fire. Unruffled, he surged ahead and in the ensuing engagement, eight tanks and some Pakistani officers were captured, recalled the Chief Minister. Eventually, Jagjit Singh left the Army on matter of principles, he added.

Disclosing that Brigadier Sukhjit Singh wrote a letter to him advising him to join Army when he was only 14 years old, the Chief Minister stated he had always looked up to him as his brother. "Though I had already decided to join Army and at the time of receiving the letter I had no idea who Brig Sukhjit Singh was, I later came to know of him after joining the  Army and since then we have been in constant touch,” said Captain Amarinder.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Badnore said he was honoured to stand between members of two royal families. He described the book as more than a coffee table book and said extensive research had gone into the book, which was set in the backdrop of the period between the first and second industrial revolutions, that saw many notable events and developments take place the world over.

In India, this was the period that saw some of the most legendary rules, such as Ganga Singh in Rajasthan, as well as Bhupinder Singh and Jagjit Singh in Punjab. All these royals did great work for their states, he said, adding that eventually though the Rajasthan royal families turned their palaces into hotels, in Punjab their benevolence led to them give up everything for the welfare of the people. The Governor cited the example of the school being run in Kapurthala Palace and the Sports Institute in Moti Bagh in Patiala.

Speaking on the occasion, Cynthia Meera Frederick, a conservation architect who was intrigued by the Maharaja's love for French architecture, thanked the Chief Minister for launching the book and said that it was only befitting that the book was formally being launched in Chandigarh as Maharaja Jagatjit Singh was passionate about architecture and urban planning. He thoroughly embraced modernity and was a very forward looking ruler who would have appreciated Chandigarh both aesthetically and for what it represents, she added. The city and its facilities would have transfixed him, as Maharaja Jagatjit Singh was an admirer of urban space science, she added.

Talking about the challenges faced in writing the book, Brigadier Sukhjit Singh said the book would go a long in dispelling long-held notions about the monarchs being generally labeled as feudal Thakurs and Nawabs, who were the reason for everything ailing the society. For a society which now believes in ostentatious display of wealth, the book on a Maharaja who seamlessly stood for equality would stimulate thought in the right direction, Brig Sukjhit further said.

The ceremony was also attended by Cabinet Ministers Brahm Mohindra, Manpreet Singh Badal and Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Senior Advisor to CM Lt. General T S Shergill, Principal Secretary to CM Tejveer Singh, Special Secretary to CM Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, DGP Suresh Arora, DGP Intelligence Dinkar Gupta, former Chief of Army staff V P Malik and former Union Minister Pawan Bansal.

NEITHER CONGRESS NOR GANDHI'S HAD ANY ROLE
Amarinder lashes out at Sukhbir for trying to drag Rahul, Gandhi family into '84 riots case
20.12.18 - TEAM PT
Amarinder lashes out at Sukhbir for trying to drag Rahul, Gandhi family into '84 riots case

CHANDIGARH, DECEMBER 20: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has lashed out at Sukhbir Singh Badal for trying once again to drag the innocent Gandhi family into the 1984 riots case, in which only a few individual Congress leaders were involved without any support, covert or overt, by the party leadership.

Ridiculing the SAD president’s frustrated attempts to undermine Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, under which the Congress has recently swept to victory in the Assembly elections in three major states, the Chief Minister said it was evident that Sukhbir was desperately trying to grab at straws to fight back into the electoral game ahead of the parliamentary polls.

Lambasting the Akalis for exploiting religious sensitivities to garner electoral support, Amarinder Singh asked Sukhbir to stop politicizing such a sensitive issue. Misusing religion for political gains will not yield any dividends for the SAD and would backfire on the party in the Lok Sabha elections, as it had done in the 2017 Assembly polls.

The Chief Minister reiterated his stance that while individuals who had any role to play in spreading mayhem against the Sikh community deserved to be punished and should pay for their crimes, it was irrational to try and drag the Congress party as a whole, or the Gandhis, into the case. Rahul was a school-going child and Rajeev Gandhi was away in West Bengal at the time of the violence, Captain Amarinder Singh pointed out, lambasting Sukhbir for trying to exploit the religious sentiments of the Sikhs for petty political gains.
-----
Criminals have no religion and are not affiliated to any political party, said Captain, adding that all those responsible for perpetrating the violence in the wake of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination will pay for their crimes.
-----
Criminals have no religion and are not affiliated to any political party, said Captain, adding that all those responsible for perpetrating the violence in the wake of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination will pay for their crimes. The courts have already set a precedent in the case by sentencing Sajjan Kumar to life term, said the Chief Minister, expressing the confidence that others guilty of the heinous crime will also pay in the same coin.

If Sukhbir was really concerned about punishing the guilty, why had he never raised the issue of the 22 RSS/BJP workers named in the FIR registered in the case at Tughlaq Road police station, questioned the Chief Minister, adding that the entire hullabaloo being raised by the Akalis was nothing but politically motivated agenda to divert attention from their own wrongdoings and misdeeds. The Congress, including Rahul Gandhi, had never raised this issue as they believed that criminals had no political ideologies or affiliations.

He pointed out that he had been consistently maintaining that Sajjan Kumar was named by the victims whom he had visited in the refugee camps following the riots. The names of other Congress leaders whom Sukhbir was trying persistently to drag into the case were never mentioned, said  Amarinder.

It was up to the judiciary, however, to nail and award punishment to the culprits, and neither Sukhbir nor any other Akali or BJP leader had any locus standii in the matter, said the Chief Minister, asking the SAD president to stop trying to take political mileage out of the issue ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Amarinder said every case against any individual involved in the rioting would be taken to its logical conclusion by the courts, which did not need Sukhbir’s guidance in the matter.

Comment by: Ravi

Amarinder defending the Gandhi's is shamefully sad., Given rajiv Gandhi's role in justifying ,and covering up the Sikh genocide...And rewarding the killers.
Sonia and rahul are equally complicated in the cover up effort.
Is Capt unaware of rails denial of any Congress involvement in the killings..!!!???
Sound what it may, but a Sikh defending the Congress party is like a jew defending the nazi party.. shameful
Not that the badals have done anything which is more that political opportunism

Badal always sabotaged Sikh interests with acts of omission & commission: Amarinder

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday lashed out at Prakash Singh Badal over his atrocious accusations, saying it was not him but the Akali veteran who was trying to sabotage the interests of the Sikh community, and Punjab, with his injudicious statement.

The Chief Minister was reacting to Badal’s allegation that he (Capt Amarinder Singh) was trying to sabotage the Kartarpur Corridor.

Badal’s statement was in line with his approach of exploiting religious issues to further his political interests, said Captain Amarinder, adding that the former chief minister was once again trying to mislead the people of Punjab with his baseless allegations. It was the Congress leadership, from Indira Gandhi to Dr Manmohan Singh, that had always striven for the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, and he himself had been raising the issue with Pakistan as well as the central government on various occasions, the Chief Minister pointed out.

As a Sikh, he himself had always aspired for the opening of the historic corridor with the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, with which his own family had historic ties, said Captain Amarinder, adding that it was idiotic, in the circumstances, to suggest that he could try to block the Corridor and sabotage the fulfilment of the aspirations of the Sikh community.

In fact, he said, he was proud of the fact that the Punjab government, under his command, had worked closely with the central government on the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor. Besides underscoring the strong desires of the entire Sikh community, as well as those who have deep faith in the teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Punjab government had worked closely with the central government in successfully overcoming the many & strong security concerns and infrastructural challenges in opening up the Indo-Pak border in the face of the huge dangers posed by the Pakistani State and its agencies, said the Chief Minister. The Punjab government was able to assure and convince the central government that the security concerns and challenges could be met with the required checks and balances, which could be built into the system and security regime, he added.

By choosing to close his eyes to the harsh and sad reality of the Pak threat, Badal Senior had once again shown he was least concerned about the welfare of the people of Punjab and was only bothered about the political gains he could make from the opening of the Corridor, which his party had been trying to take undue credit for, said Captain Amarinder.

While it was a dream for him to visit the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, he could not turn a blind eye to the terror being perpetrated in his land by the ISI-backed forces, nor could he ignore the killings of innocent soldiers by the Pakistani army, said the Chief Minister, adding that Badal, as a veteran leader and former chief minister of Punjab, should be able to appreciate the many perils and dangers posed by Pakistan to the border state of Punjab and the Indian State.

The Chief Minister also hoped and expected that the Pakistan PM and the Pak Army will deliver on their promise of opening up the Kartarpur corridor before the sacred occasion of 550th Year Celebrations of the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev ji in November 2019. On his part, Capt. Amarinder Singh assured the Sikh community that the Punjab government would be ready with world-class Infrastructure and facilities for the lakhs of Sikh pilgrims on the Indian side in Dera Baba Nanak very soon. His government was totally committed and ready with the required plans and designs to complete the required Infrastructure, along with the central government, at the earliest, he added.

BEGINNING OF END OF MODI RULE
Amarinder hails Congress victory in 3 states as mandate for Rahul

Amarinder hails Congress victory in 3 states as mandate for Rahul

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has hailed the Congress victory in three states as a mandate for the leadership of party president Rahul Gandhi and said it marked the beginning of the end of the BJP-led NDA government in the country.

Reacting to the Assembly poll results declared today, the Chief Minister said the Congress performance showed that the party was on an upswing across the country. The results has clearly shown that the people of India were now fed up of the destructive and anti-development policies of the Narendra Modi government and wanted a positive change.

Congratulating the party president, as well as UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, for the Congress win in three states of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Captain Amarinder Singh said the party had clearly revived under the dynamic leadership of Rahul.

The results were a sign of the mood of the nation, which saw in Rahul the youthful change it needed to bring India back on the track of development, which had been the hallmark of the previous UPA regime under former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. The people of India felt cheated by the failure of the Modi government to deliver on any of its promises made five years ago, he said, adding that, at the same time, they were desperate to see an end to the vicious cycle of communal hatred and violence unleashed by the BJP-led regime.

It is a moment of celebration not just for the Congress but also for the people of this country, said the Chief Minister.
