Capt Amarinder invites Nitish Kumar for Hola Mohalla celebrations

Patna: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has invited his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar to participate in the state-level Hola Mohalla celebrations to mark the beginning of the Sikh New Year in 2018.

The invitation was issued when Amarinder called on Nitish here on Friday, during a visit to Takht Sri Patna Sahib, to pay his respects on the occasion of the 350th birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru.

During a brief meeting, which a spokesperson described as a courtesy call, Captain informed the Bihar Chief Minister that he had decided to send a team from Punjabi University, Patiala, where a Chair has been established in the name of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji, to the Dashmesh Pita’s birthplace in Patna for research.

He also congratulated Nitish on the excellent arrangements made for the lakhs of devotees, converging at Sri Patna Sahib from around the world. He had personally seen the arrangements, which he found to be extremely impressive, said the Punjab Chief Minister.

He apprised the Bihar Chief Minister about the arrangements made by his government to mark the historic occasion. Besides organising a series of special programmes, culminating in a mega event at Sri Anandpur Sahib on December 24, the Punjab government has also arranged for three special trains to ferry pilgrims from Patiala, Amritsar and Bathinda to Patna, he said, adding that the trains were flagged off this morning and would leave on the return journey to Punjab on December 26.

This was the second meeting this year between Captain Amarinder and Nitish. The Bihar Chief Minister had hosted Captain Amarinder for lunch at his residence when, as Punjab Congress president, the latter had visited Sri Patna Sahib in January this year.

CONGRESS PLAYING A DOUBLE GAME WITH FARMERS
Govt instructing bank officials to hold dharnas in front of farmer houses: SAD

Govt instructing bank officials to hold dharnas in front of farmer houses: SAD

Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today strongly condemned the Congress government for insulting and demeaning farmers by instructing bank officials to hold Dharnas in front of their houses to force them to repay their bank dues.

In a press release here, former minister and Vice President of the SAD, Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema said the Congress had shown its real face to the farmer community by passing such inhuman instructions to bank officials. He said however by holding Dharnas in front of houses of farmers who were already aggrieved due to the Congress government failure to waive off their loans, the bank officials had crossed all limits.

"Earlier these officials were pasting notices on farmer houses and even making public denouncing them as defaulters through loudspeakers. But by now holding Dharnas they have done the unthinkable. They should know that it is the government which is responsible for farmers not paying their loans. If they have to hold Dharnas they should hold them in front of elected Congress representatives, ministers and even the chief minister and not farmer houses", he added.

Condemning the action of the Punjab Agricultural Development Bank officials, who recently held dharnas in the houses of farmers at Ghanour, Chappar and Harpalpur villages in Patiala district, Cheema said the Congress party was playing a double game with the farmers. On one hand announcements have been made to waive off loans up to Rs. 2 lakh and on the other hand bank officials are being asked to hold dharnas at farmers houses or make arrests to force them to repay their loans.

Holding the Congress government responsible for the rising number of farm suicides in the state, the SAD leader said more than 300 farmers have committed suicide due to the anti-farmer policies of the Amarinder Singh government. He said using cruel methods for loan recovery would further push the already distressed farmer community into depression which may result in further rise in farm suicides.

Asking the state government to direct bank officials to immediately stop using such cruel methods for loan recovery from farmers in the state, the SAD leader said that rather, the Congress government should immediately implement its promise of complete loan waiver of Rs 90,000 crore to pull out the farm community from their financial crisis.

IRCTC gives permission for special trains to and from Patna Sahib

Chandigarh: Decks have been cleared for special trains to carry devotees from Punjab to and from Patna Sahib for the 350th Birth Anniversary celebrations of tenth Master of the Sikhs Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji.

Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the state government had sought permission from the Indian Railways to run special trains from Amritsar, Bathinda and Patiala to Patna Sahib. The Railways have given permission to the state to run the trains to Patna on December 22, returning with the pilgrims on December 27, an official spokesperson said here on Tuesday.

The formal permission from Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) was received by the State Transport Commissioner (STC), said the spokesperson.

Providing details, the spokesperson said that a special train would leave from Amritsar railway station at 9:45 am on December 22 and arrive at Patna Sahib at 11:45 am on December 23. Another special train would leave for Patna Sahib from Patiala railway station on December 22 at 9:30 am and reach Patna Sahib railway station at 11:00 am on December 23, whereas the third special train from Bathinda railway station would depart at 9:00 am on December 22 and reach at Patna Sahib next day at 11:00 am. All these special trains would start from Patna Sahib on December 26 and return to their respective destinations on December 27.

These special trains would carry nearly 1500 devotees each escorted by government officials besides a team of doctors and pharmacists.

The decision to run these special trains from Punjab to Patna Sahib was taken at a specially convened meeting under the chairmanship of Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday to review the arrangements for the celebration of the 350th Parkash Purb of tenth Sikh Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib on December 24.

Adequate arrangements are being made in Patna for travel of the devotees from the railway station to Sri Patna Sahib on arrival, and back to the railway station for their departure back home. Arrangements for their accommodation are also being overseen by the advance party dispatched by the Punjab government to Patna.

HRD MINISTER SNUBS DECISION OF GOVERNING COUNCIL OF COLLEGE
HRD minister blocks move to change Dyal Singh College name

HRD minister blocks move to change Dyal Singh College name

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today welcomed the categorical assurance given by Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javedkar to SAD MP Naresh Gujaral in the Rajya Sabha today that the name of Dyal Singh College in New Delhi will not be changed.

In a statement here, the SAD president said it was appreciable that while clearing the government's stand on the issue, the HRD minister had asserted that the decision to change the name of the Dyal Singh College to Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya was not taken by the central government. "This vindicates the stand taken by us that the NDA government never had any role in this proposal. It is also laud-worthy that the HRD minister has even snubbed the governing council of the Dyal Singh College which was behind this name change proposal by stating that creating unnecessary controversies by playing with emotions is wrong", he added.

CM reviews arrangements for Guru Gobind Singh's Parkash utsav celebrations

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday reviewed the arrangements for the celebration of the 350th Parkash Utsav of 10th Master of the Sikhs Sri Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib on December 24.

The Chief Minister, who will himself be attending the celebration, took a series of decisions in consultation with several of his cabinet colleagues and top officials, whom he has directed to make all arrangements to facilitate the devotees travelling to Sri Anandpur Sahib as well as Takht Sri Patna Sahib – the birth place of Guru Sahib Ji.

Besides waiving off entry fee for the Khalsa Heritage Museum for two days (December 24-25), the government has decided to run special trains to Patna from Amritsar, Patiala and Bathinda railway stations on December 22. The trains, which will carry around 1500 pilgrims each, will have government officials, as well as doctors and pharmacists, accompanying the passengers on the journey.

Arrangements for ferrying the devotees from the Patna railway station to the Patna Sahib Gurudwara, as well as their stay, are also being made, disclosed an official spokesperson, after the high-level meeting. The spokesperson said an advance party has been sent to Sri Patna Sahib to make preparations for the pilgrims expected to arrive from Punjab.

In Punjab, the main event at Anandpur Sahib will witness a series of programmes, including performances by Bhai Baldeep Singh (exponent of Classical Gurbani Kirtan), Punjabi Singer Gurdas Maan, eminent Sikh scholar and musician Dr. Gurnam Singh and Punjabi poet Surjit Patar. Des Raj and Party Raagi Dhadi Jatha, followed by Gurmat Sangeet by Dr. Niveditta Singh and classical recital by Rajan Sajan Mishra are some of the other highlights of the event, which will have a lecture by noted Sikh scholar Bhai Ashok Singh Bagrian and Head of History Department (retd) Panjab University Prof. Dr. Indu Banga.

The Chief Minister has directed the Speaker to personally monitor the arrangements for the programme, expected to be attended by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

The main event will be preceded by a series of symposiums and exhibitions, to be held across the state, said the spokesperson.

The review meeting was attended, among others, by Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha Rana Kanwar Pal Singh, Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Media Advisor to CM Raveen Thukral, Chief Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar, Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Tejveer Singh, Director General of Police Suresh Arora, DGP (Law and Order) Hardeep Singh Dhillon, Secretary (Political) to CM Capt Sandeep Sandhu, Principal Secretary Food and Civil Supplies KAP Sinha, Secretary Tourism and Cultural Affairs Vikas Partap and  Deputy Commissioner Rupnagar Guneet Kaur Tej.
