'SIKH COMMUNITY WON'T TOLERATE THIS ATTACK ON ITS RELIGIOUS TRADITION AND PRACTICES'
Only Congress govt could scrap holy day of Baisakhi from the list of holidays: Sukhbir Badal

Only Congress govt could scrap holy day of Baisakhi from the list of holidays: Sukhbir Badal

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today said only a Congress government, which had always treated Sikh religion and its institutions callously, could scrap the holy day to mark the creation of the Khalsa from the official list of holidays in Punjab.

In a statement here, the SAD president said the same Congress party was responsible for attacking Sri Harmandar Sahib with tanks besides perpetrating the worst genocide against the Sikh community in 1984. "Only such a party could scrap the holy day of Baisakhi from the list of government holidays. By doing so it has again poured salt over the wounds of the Sikh community which will never tolerate this attack on its religious tradition and practices”.

Demanding an immediate rollback of this decision, Sukhbir Badal said it was shocking that the Congress government had tried to belittle the historic significance of Baisakhi on which day Sri Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa panth in 1699. "Baishakhi is celebrated by one and all as it also marks the arrival of the spring harvest. On this occasion people visit gurdwaras and community fairs besides participating in nagar kirtans. Special celebrations are held at Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib and Talwandi Sabo on the occasion. Stopping people from attending these is an anti-Punjabi step which we will oppose tooth and nail”.

Stating that no government could be allowed to show abject disrespect to the common Punjabi heritage, Badal said the government must understand that it cannot do any governance, what to talk of better governance by insulting the emotions of its citizens. "The insult to the Guru’s day of creation is unacceptable and this arbitrary decision must be rescinded immediately”, he added.

Badal said as far as reviewing list of holidays was concerned, this should have been done only after adequate consultation and consensus instead of riding roughshod over the sentiments of everyone by adopting an arrogant and dictatorial attitude. "There is tremendous resentment also on why the government is not commemorating the martyrdom day of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, installation day of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Mahashivratri besides Eid-ul-Zuha and days associated with martyrs. The government should take immediate remedial action”, he added.

Bir Devinder slams Fatehgarh Sahib head priest, SGPC member for memo to CM in sanctum sanctorum

Bir Devinder slams Fatehgarh Sahib head priest, SGPC member for memo to CM in sanctum sanctorum

FATEHGARH SAHIB, December 28: Former Deputy Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bir Devinder Singh, who was in the forefront of a public resistance movement that forced political parties to scrap plans to hold their annual rallies at the Shaheedi Jor Mela at Fatehgarh Sahib, has now taken upon the head priest of the holy shrine and the SGPC member Karnail Singh Panjoli for having submitted a memorandum of demands to CM Amarinder Singh in the sanctum sanctorum of the gurdwara.

"It is appalling that the Head Priest of Gurdwara Fateh Garh Sahib, Bhai Harpal Singh, and SGPC member Karnail Singh Panjoli, along with gurdwara manager Jasbir Singh brazenly violated the religious code by submitting a memorandum of demands to CM Amarinder Singh in the sanctum-sanctorum of Gurdwara Fateh Garh Sahib,” Bir Devinder Singh said.

He said the CM was himself visiting the shrine as a devout Sikh, seeking Guru's blessings, when, ironically, Harpal Singh and Panjoli chose to beseech him for worldly favours in the sanctum-sanctorum.

"This reprehensible act of Panjoli and the head priest in utter disregard of the Sikh values and spiritual sanctity of the sanctum-sanctorum has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community for which they not only deserve reprimand but severe punishment also,” the former legislator said.
-----------
Bir Devinder also joined issue with those seeking to turn the sub jail Bassi Pathana into a tourist resort and said it was never the demand of the Sikh community.
-----------
He said he has written to the Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh SGPC and president Gobind Singh Longowal also in this regard.

Bir Devinder also joined issue with those seeking to turn the sub jail Bassi Pathana into a tourist resort and said it was never the demand of the Sikh community.

The ninth Sikh guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, spent more than three months in this jail along with his three disciples — Bhai Mati Dass, Bhai Sati Dass and Bhai Dayala Ji — before they attained martyrdom. Bir Devinder said with such a historical context, the SGPC needs to reclaim the premises and raise a Sikh shrine there.

"I’m sure even the CM has not been adequately briefed on the issue, else he would not have asked the secretary for cultural affairs and tourism to submit a plan to erect a memorial at the site,” he said.
