Amarinder's Search Party Looks For 550 True Followers of Guru Nanak

CAPTAIN AMARINDER SINGH's secular Congress government has now taken upon itself the onerous responsibility of identifying, shortlisting and eventually selecting "550 true followers" of Guru Nanak.

In a solemn statement, the Punjab Government recently announced that it will be looking for and shortlisting 550 "sache pairokar" — "True Followers" — and will be scouring the lands at home and abroad.

So far, the only tradition of the chosen ones in Sikhism is of the Panj Pyaras, the Five Beloved Ones, initiated by the Tenth Sikh Master, Guru Gobind Singh ji. Now that the Punjab Government is deep into this selection process, there are plans afoot to honour the selected 550 "True Followers" of Guru Nanak in a manner befitting the occasion of 550th year of the founder of Sikhism.

The government has made it clear that race, colour, nationality will be no bar to qualify for this unique and unprecedented honour, but it is not clear whether the list will have many names from Pakistan, or any at all.

Interestingly, and a little amusingly, the initiative has been handed over to Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab's Minister for Tourism and Culture, who has announced that only those names will qualify in this select list of 550 people who have complete faith in the teachings of Guru Nanak and who have actually lived their life in consonance with these teachings.

A key qualification seems to be that all such selected people must be achievers or celebrities in one or the other domain, and a mere Guru Nanak Naam Leva stands little chance to qualify.

According to the minister, the net was cast wide to search for these followers of Guru Nanak and an elaborate advertisement was also issued asking people, celebrities and organisations to nominate select people for the honour.

The move, however, has drawn some sharp criticism from intellectual quarters within the community, and one of the key questions that has troubled anyone engaging with this exercise is about who will have the final say in deciding whether one is a True Guru Nanak Naam Leva or not?

"Who will select the selectors?" is not finding any answers, though by now it is clear who the selectors are.

While one of the provisos says the final list will be put up in the public domain to invite any objections, many are asking why objections were not invited when it was the turn to select these selectors.

The selectors also include a self-styled scholar who has spent some time behind bars in a case of corruption and also has the dubious honour of having his book banned by the Akal Takht. He is the one apparently calling the shots when it comes to selecting "True Followers" of the Guru.

The government has so far refused to answer pertinent questions about the qualifications of the selectors or the selectees. Neither the CMO nor the minister concerned has thought it prudent to offer any explanation what qualifies the selectors to judge the spiritual achievements of fellow human beings.

On his astrologer’s advice, Charanjit Channi rode an elephant in the lawns of his house in Kharar.

Critics have also raised questions about the Minister's own understanding of the philosophy and teachings of Guru Nanak, and many have recalled the minister's earlier fight to have an illegal access road laid in his residential area to deal with the Vaastu Dosh. The same minister had made news for sending romantic verses to a woman officer and later had to apologise.

The Amarinder Singh Government has not made clear as to what could be a possible deal-breaker in selecting these certified and government-approved True Followers of Guru Nanak. Neither is it clear whether the honour could be withdrawn in case a selected and honoured sarkari "True Follower” falls foul of the law on a future date.

Many scholars have argued that the selection criteria seems to be even more lax than the one that the Congress party follows to give away tickets for Assembly or Lok Sabha polls. The longlisted or shortlisted or even the finally selected will not be required to file a sworn affidavit that they have never been involved in any criminal case, neither do they have to swear that they do not own any ill-begotten assets.

The government has not explained why one has to be a known achiever or a celebrity to qualify as the "True Follower” of Guru Nanak, and why can't a poor or middle class hardworking God fearing man of any religion living his simple life and caring about the small world around him qualify for this honour.

So far there are no reports of anyone refusing to be part of any such shortlist, and if sources are to be believed, many a humble scholars, writers, journalists and persons dabbling in the world of art and culture are pulling out all stops and knocking at umpteen doors to be counted among the "True Followers", approved and certified by the Punjab Government of Captain Amarinder Singh.

Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University
Another half-baked idea from CM's advisory stable
25.10.19 - Bir Devinder Singh*
Another half-baked idea from CM's advisory stable

There seems to be no rationale behind the lop-sided and half-baked idea of setting up Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University in Patiala, in the wake of the fiscal plight of the existing State Universities, starving for lack of adequate funding by the State Government.

The alarming exodus of Punjab youth to chase their ‘foreign dreams’ abroad is not being addressed by the State Government, with the alacrity it deserves. An estimated 1,50,000 students from Punjab got their Visas approved for Canada followed by Australia, UK, New Zealand and USA in the year 2018 only .

Most of the educational institutions in Punjab, including the State Universities, are grappling with the financial crisis, emanating out of the sharp fall in admissions in various academic courses.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Canadian Government alone has listed 250 colleges where students from Punjab can get admissions and this opening has given fillip to the enormity of exodus of youth from Punjab.

Notably the Punjab has lost Rs. 27000 Crores in 2018, which the parents of Punjabi Students have deposited as fees with the various foreign institutions to send their wards abroad, this is beside the loot by the agents.

Alarming rate of exodus of Punjabi youth is also causing demographic crisis in Punjab, which does not seem to be a matter of worry for Capt. Amarinder Singh.

The Punjab Government should have appointed a ‘High power review committee of top academicians’ for the systematic review of the academic performance of all the State universities including the technical universities, having the top technocrats on board.
------------
The flagrant idea to set up a new University at Patiala must have been floated by an unemployed pseudo scholar just to cleverly grab the opportunity to become its first Vice Chancellor.
------------
It is high time to study the deep rooted menace, as to what is ailing our education system. Even the school education requires fundamental recast in the wake of the challenges, our young generations are confronted with. Rapid growth in the number of Private universities in Punjab has practically paralyzed the State Universities.

Unfortunately the politicians of all the hues were carried away by the greed of the commercial profiteering and absurdly preferred to make hasty and hefty fiscal gains, rather than strengthening the State Universities of Punjab for imparting quality education in various academic streams.

It is worth mentioning here that currently all the State universities are marred with huge budgetary deficits and the State finance department has miserably failed to bail out the existing State Universities. Then why establish another University with your empty coffers, in the name of Jagat Guru Nanak to blemish the divine name of Guru Nanak, when you are not in a position to guarantee the fiscal providence for the new commemorative University?

Even the Guru Granth Sahib World University set up by the SGPC is currently facing a huge fiscal crisis. The SGPC instead of financing the university to offset its fiscal burden preferred to spend Guru Ki Golak extravagantly for their narrow political interests in the name 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

As per my insinuate guess and most presumably there must be an unemployed pseudo scholar, floating around Capt. Amarinder Singh for want of profitable job, who must have floated the flagrant Idea for the quick fascination of the Chief Minister. Thereafter he must have lobbied  its exaltedness with some of the ‘Crony Ministers’ of Captain’s Cabinet, to set up a new University at Patiala, just to cleverly grab the opportunity to become its first Vice Chancellor. The Chief Minister without even a diminutive application of mind got captivated with the idea and allowed his cabinet to approve it.

If at all the State Government is serious to promote the open and distant learning skills in Punjab, there is an ample scope to fit in the idea within the existing infrastructure of the State Universities but the entire metaphor of the idea has to be reshaped, in order to incorporate the same in the existing modules of learning.

THE REPRESENTATION OF PEOPLE ACT
Mr. Speaker, please do not fool around with the constitution
23.10.19 - Bir Devinder Singh*
Mr. Speaker, please do not fool around with the constitution

It appears as if the Representation of People Act either has no jurisdiction over Punjab or it has become practically redundant for the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Rana KP Singh, who capriciously enjoys flirting with its statutory provisions, convenient to his whims and fancies.

It is certainly a strange and dangerous phenomenon when the Hon'ble Speaker of the House, chose not to act decisively and keep meditating indefinitely on the most important matters of the State legislature pertaining to the political dignity of the parliamentary system .

The solipsist indulgence of the Speaker becomes rather baffling when it does not seem to have any conclusive ending and the issues pending before him, becomes routinely in-fructuous with the passage of time. Most unfortunately the significant issue of disqualification of law makers becomes an anorectic substance in the public eye when there is no discernible serious contemplation.

It’s quite disappointing to observe that either the Representation of People Act, has become too fragile, losing its detrimental effect or those persons responsible for its implementation has become too clever to hoodwink its ramification.

Nothing could be more abysmal and politically incorrect than this, that all the legislators, who either defected or deserted their parent party on whose symbol they have been elected but erroneously continue to draw salaries and perks and also enjoy all facilities as the respective members of the party which they have already defected and also audaciously occupy the same seats allotted to them as member of the AAP Legislature Party.

At the end of the day Mr. Sukhpal Singh Khaira has finally emerged as a crafty champion who could successfully hoodwink the public perception with regard to deception and defections.

Situation emerging out of the withdrawal of Mr. Khaira’s resignation is so mysterious and inexplicable that for the benefit of the public mind, only the Speaker of the House Mr. KP Singh Rana could reveal the factual position, as to which party Mr. Sukhpal Singh Khaira now represents in Punjab legislative assembly?

KARTARPUR SAHIB CORRIDOR
Harsimrat Badal’s statement to term the $20 entry fee as ‘Jaziya’ is ridiculous
07.10.19 - Bir Devinder Singh*
Harsimrat Badal’s statement to term the $20 entry fee as ‘Jaziya’ is ridiculous

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, in a ridiculous statement, has equated the $20 (US Dollar) entry fee, proposed by Pakistan to be charged from the pilgrims who visit Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib via Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from Dera Baba Nanak, with ‘Jaziya’. It is pertinent to mention here that every country in the World charge hefty VISA fees, while applying  for the grant of VISA, then what is so fundamentally wrong; if Pakistan has imposed $20 (US Dollar) on VISA free entry to its territory?

Rs 500/- entry fee is charged from the NRIs to visit Red Fort. Fees are even charged from the children to visit Zoo. Furthermore you are bound to pay toll tax on every toll barrier put up on the roads built by Ministry of Surface Transport, Govt. of India. Notably, If you travel by road  from any corner of Punjab to Visit Sultanpur Lodhi, Amritsar or Dera Baba Nanak, you end up paying toll charges, for back and forth journey, exceeding far beyond Pakistan’s 20 US Dollars. Harsimrat Kaur Badal should first ask the Government of India to waive all charges on the toll barriers on the roads leading to Sultanpur Lodhi, Dera Baba Nanak and Amritsar. Ironically when you are charging your own citizens for the facilities built for them only, then why cry foul on mere $ 20, levied by Pakistan.

Moreover whenever Harsimrat Badal speaks to media she never misses to mention the amount of funds Government of India has incurred to build facilities at Dera Baba Nanak to regulate the flow of Sikh pilgrims on the international border, through Kartarpur Sahib Corridor as if it’s not the responsibility of the incumbent Government to do so. It is such an embarrassment as if the Modi Government is doling out money as a ‘mortifying charity’ to the Sikh community. On a hindsight no Pakistan official or the Minister has ever mentioned the enormity of cost they have incurred to construct corridor or raise facilities for the visiting Sikh pilgrims across the border at Kartarpur Sahib.

Harsimrat Badal has even boasted for a paltry amount of 27 Crore which the Government of India is believed to have sanctioned as matching grant to develop Sultanpur Lodhi  as  smart City. I wish to make it absolutely clear that Rs. 27 Crore is not even peanuts as compare to Rs. 3500 Crore spent by Government of India to raise 182 meter tall statue of Sardar Patel in Gujarat.  Then why embarrass the Sikhs every now and then by mentioning the amount spent at Dera Baba Nanak. The Pakistan authorities across the border have also built similar world class facilities, they also must have incurred the heavy cost for the same, but they never mentioned it anywhere in the public view like Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
--------------
The abominable overindulgence of Harsimrat Badal in the affairs of the SGPC and her self-assumed role as super President of SGPC, certainly causing disheveled shadows on the grace of the solemn occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji.
--------------
We should rather appreciate the commendable initiative of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, notwithstanding the hostile atmosphere prevailing between the two counties on host of issues. He responded positively with magnanimity to the prayers of Sikh Community and the followers of Guru Nanak Dev for free access to their holy shrines blessed by Sikh Gurus, ever since the partition of India . With the blessings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the  Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan happens to be the first person to respect and respond to the  consistent spiritual prayers of the Sikh community for 72 Years, in the right earnest and the Government of India precisely reciprocated the bold initiative of the Pakistan establishment in this regard which also deserves appreciation.

Prime Minister Narinder Modi should advise his minister, Harsimrat Badal who seriously lacks sublime maturity as a Minister, not to be callous and absurd in her rhetoric every now and then, when she speaks to the media about the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji. She should devote her attention to her Ministry rather than awkwardly superimposing her persona in taking political credit for every noticeable fragment that is seen progressing on the surface either at Sultanpur Lodhi or at Dera Baba Nanak, by indecently exceeding her brief in every manner as a Minister.

The abominable overindulgence of Harsimrat Badal in the affairs of the SGPC and her self-assumed role as super President of SGPC, certainly causing disheveled shadows on the grace of the solemn occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Her repeated diatribe against the Punjab Government, undertaking the preparatory works at Sultanpur Lodhi and Dera Baba Nanak, is ostensibly making things worse.

The SGPC and Punjab Government must eschew confrontation and evolve attitude to impart the message of universal brotherhood; embedded with love, peace, tolerance and above all the truthful living; as enunciated by Guru Nanak Dev. Both these agencies are unfortunately wasting time and resources doing things in contrast to the fundamental teachings and the beliefs of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
