Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra, a member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha's Committee tasked to help ameliorate the lot of suicide-hit farmer families and debt-ridden agricultural labourers, has dissociated himself from the report of the panel and submitted a dissent note.
The panel, comprising five MLAs, was headed by Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria of the Congress. Its other members were Nathu Ram and Kuljit Singh Nagra (both from Congress) and Najar Singh Manshahia (Aam Aadmi Party).
"This report will not serve any purpose since it does not even mention the impact of not implementing the promise of waiving off the entire farm debt."
In his dissent note submitted to the chairman of the panel, Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra of the Shiromani Akali Dal said, "This report will not serve any purpose since it does not even mention the impact of not implementing the promise of waiving off the entire farm debt."
"Waiving off the debt was the promise of the Punjab government. The state government should have fulfilled its promise. I cannot be a part of any recommendation that gives the state government an exit route to escape from this responsibility," Chandumajra said.
Aam Aadmi Party also unlikely to be a party to the report.
Another SAD MLA, Dilraj Singh Bhunder, told Punjab Today that his party cannot be a part of any report that does not even recommend waiving off the term loans of farmers and entire loans of suicide-affected families.
The Committee has not made public if AAP's Najar Singh Manshahia submitted any note of dissent. Manshahia himself could not be contacted but sources in the AAP said it was unlikely that the party will be a party to the final report.
