Capt. Amarinder Singh on Friday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s draconian demonetisation move, while alleging that the Badal government in the state was sitting pretty while lakhs of people were suffering from acute cash crunch.
Talking to mediapersons outside the Dera Bassi branch of the State Bank of India (SBI), where he stopped over on way from Delhi to Chandigarh, he said while the people of Punjab were facing unprecedented financial crisis, the Badals were completely unconcerned about their plight since they had control of various institutions and businesses to transform their own black money into white.
Captain, who joined the local Congress leaders and workers helping out harassed people at the bank, lamented the problems faced by the people, many of whom had been standing in queues for hours.
The situation, said Capt. Amarinder, was extremely grave, yet the Badal government was taking no steps to ease the discomfort of the people, who complained to the Punjab Congress president that they were finding it difficult to survive in the absence of petty cash to see them through even a single day.
The Badals are naturally not worried since they own several hotels, transport business etc to help them get through the demonetisation-triggered crisis, he said. The Punjab Congress chief reiterated his allegation that the Badals will simply pass off their black money as `chadawa’ at the gurudwaras through the SGPC, which is also under the Akali control.
