'SUFI’ singer, ‘Raj Gayak’ and former 'Gaddi Nasheen' (head) of the Dera Lal Badshah, based in Nakodar, Han Raj ‘Hans’ seems to be desperate to pluck pearls and sing Raag Darbari but not getting a chance to hone his skills.
If facts were any indication, Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans on Saturday met Aam Admi Party (AAP) Jalandhar Zonal Observer Rajiv Chaudhary in a ‘secret meeting’ held at his residence with Balmiki community leaders from Doaba reported Kusum Arora in Daily Post.
A major political development, the meeting assumes significance; as AAP National Convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was all set to visit Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar on March 15. The AAP state leadership was also going to organize a fund raising lunch in Jalandhar on Sunday ahead of Kejriwal’s visit to the dalit stronghold.
Hans too had openly declared his resentment against the Punjab Congress leadership for dropping his name for the Rajya Sabha elections at the eleventh hour on Thursday. Hans had joined the congress on February 20 in the presence of Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh.
Daily Post spoke to Rajiv Chaudhary, who agreed that he went to meet the singer at his residence in the morning. "I have been a big fan of Hans ji and went to meet him at his residence. It is just a coincidence that I went to meet him today but it was a ‘non-political’ visit”, he said.
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) secretary and City Balmiki Sabha president Amrit Khosla, who was also present during the meeting could not deny the development and said, "Rajiv Chaudhary had came by-chance and he sat with Hans ji for around 15-minutes only.”
Over a dozen balmiki leaders, who were present during the meeting were tight lipped over the day’s development. Sources maintained that the secret meeting in the wake of recent upheaval was enough to disturb the apple cart of congress. The congress had brought Hans eyeing the balmiki votes in doaba, which was crucial to consolidate the lost dalit vote bank.
Meanwhile, the Balmiki leaders had on Friday announced during a press conference in Jalandhar, that they were exploring the option of joining AAP too. They had declared that Kejriwal was coming to Jalandhar and if the congress leadership did not rectify its mistake, they would be forced to ‘boycott’ congress in the assembly elections.
It is pertinent to mention here that during the Lok Sabha elections 2014 too, Hans was approached by the AAP leadership to contest elections from the Jalandhar parliamentary seat. Hans was denied a ticket by the SAD from the Jalandhar seat, which had left him and the entire Balmiki Mazhbi Sikh community agitated.
At that time, the AAP leadership was holding secret talks with Hans, when Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal intervened and appointed him the campaign committee chief of Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
Earlier, Hans has unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections 2009 on a SAD ticket from Jalandhar.
I am with the Congress Party: Hans Raj Hans
Hans Raj Hans said that he was going to stay with the congress, as he honours the commitment and efforts of Capt Amarinder in getting his name approved for Rajya Sabha. "Yes, Rajiv Chaudhary came to meet me at my residence today but I am not going to leave the congress. Capt Amarinder made extra efforts for me and he is a wonderful leader. However, my protest against the four dalit leaders Santokh Chaudhary, Santosh Chaudhary, Mohinder Singh Kaypee and Shamsher Singh Dullo would continue. These leaders never let a new line of dalit leadership emerge in the congress, which is why they scuttled my chances of Rajya Sabha”, he said.
