AMARINDER SINGH TO NAVJOT SIDHU — THOK DITTI TAALI

PUNJAB RESULT 2019 – Navjot Sidhu loses, Exit poll on, Amarinder Singh may shout Thoko Taali
23.05.19 - S Pal
PUNJAB RESULT 2019 – Navjot Sidhu loses, Exit poll on, Amarinder Singh may shout Thoko Taali

PUNJAB’S TOP CONTESTANT in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Navjot Singh Sidhu, lost by a huge margin in Punjab politics as his bête noire in the Congress, Captain Amarinder Singh, emerged as a giant killer, stemming the BJP’s country-wide tsunami in the state, ensuring the victory of his wife Preneet Kaur and watching two of his own party’s comrades – Sunil Jakhar and Raja Warring – biting the dust, ironically adding to his win over Sidhu.

Rahul Gandhi’s own humiliating defeat in Amethi has added to Navjot Singh Sidhu’s defeat in Punjab.

Sunil Jakhar in Gurdaspur and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring in Bathinda were practically the only two candidates for whom Navjot Singh Sidhu had campaigned, and Preneet Kaur was someone he had virtually campaigned against by asking the voters just hours before voting to teach a lesson to his own party men who were allegedly hand in glove with the Akalis.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and its superstar political campaigner Priyanka Gandhi had loaded a miffed Sidhu in their helicopter, bringing him to Ground Zero in Bathinda where the high voltage political contest saw Harsimrat Kaur Badal locked in a no-holds-barred contest against a venom-spewing Raja Warring.

How politically explosive the contest was could be guessed from the fact that the estranged cousin of the Badals and Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal had declared that the defeat of Raja Warring would amount to his political death.

With the Congress fighting to win even the Leader of the Opposition tag, Rahul Gandhi putting up an extremely poor show in his own Amethi and the Priyanka Gandhi card coming up a cropper, Navjot Singh Sidhu would have to give up any hope of toppling Amarinder Singh’s apple cart in Punjab.

Given the current lay of the political land, Amarinder’s ministry is packed with Sidhu repellents. Five ministers have already gone public in the last few hours, slamming him and asking to stay within limits or quit the ministry.

Sidhu has invariably tried to hog the moral high ground and few in Punjab politics will be surprised if he quits the ministry. Given the internal equations within the state party unit, Sidhu will find it hard to have a smooth ride.
-------------
Congress’ national leadership has ignored Amarinder Singh for a long time now but with the latest numbers, the Patiala Royale may extract his pound of flesh. Sidhu’s head could be demand number one. .
-------------
Besides, Amarinder Singh has also been able to largely fend off the Aam Aadmi Party challenge, except for Sangrur where Bhagwant Mann has carried the day, largely due to his earthy, rustic, direct connect with the people.

Congress’ national leadership has ignored Amarinder Singh for a long time now but with the latest numbers, the Patiala Royale may extract his pound of flesh. Sidhu’s head could be demand number one.

While it is understandable that Rahul Gandhi and his team did not ask Amarinder Singh to campaign for the party in other states either earlier or in these 2019 Lok Sabha polls, and that motormouth cricketer-turned-commentator-turned-comedian-turned-politician was drawing crowds from Bathinda to Bhopal, this super-sized importance granted to Sidhu has certainly left a bad taste in the mouth for many in the Punjab Congress.
 -------------
-------------
Rahul Gandhi did not once congratulate or reference the Karza Mukti Parman Patars that Amarinder Singh doled out at events which were telecast live, but was quick to grant appointments to any MLAs miffed with Amarinder Singh.

Not once did anyone in Team Rahul Gandhi pick up the phone to say a word to 40 MLAs of the party who were going all out, gunning for Amarinder Singh and writing a letter to him, telling him he was not doing enough to catch the big fish involved in drug trade in Punjab. In fact, when the gang of 40 was gleefully sharing the draft of the letter with journalists, it was clear that the high command had indicated it will remain silent.

That equation will change with immediate effect now.

In fact, the rather peculiar relationship between Rahul Gandhi and Amarinder Singh, as seen in the public domain in the past, reflected an unsavoury track record. At one stage, Amarinder Singh had publicly said that Rahul Gandhi will have to grow a lot older to assume the party leadership and advocated Sonia Gandhi keeping the party reins. Also, the Punjab chief minister did not hesitate to publicly reveal that he had directly threatened Rahul Gandhi in 2015 that he was considering floating his own party.

In a hagiography of his that he promoted unabashedly, Rahul Gandhi is quoted as saying that both sides will be losers if that were to happen and Amarinder's blunt response was: "So be it."

Other big non-contesting loser, along with Navjot Singh Sidhu and Manpreet Singh Badal, is Pratap Singh Bajwa. He found his 14 minutes of fame on the stage, sitting next to Rahul Gandhi, but will have to wait for a long time to find another opportunity.

Amarinder Singh shares a reasonably good equation with Narendra Modi. He has mended fences with Arun Jaitley. Having demanded bravery medal for the man who trussed up a Kashmiri citizen on the bonnet of a jeep as a human shield and slammed Pakistan’s Imran Khan and Pakistani Army chief General Qamar Bajwa, he has displayed enough nationalist credentials to not fall foul of Amit Shah. Going forward, Amarinder Singh may find a smoother ride in his relationship with the Centre.

Amarinder has never uttered a word against the RSS, never made it a point to join issue with the BJP about beef ban, or lynchings, or hatred against Muslims. He never spoke against love jihad or referred to the Ishrat Jahan encounter or the assault on JNU or the suicide of Rohit Vemula or the disappearance of Najib who still hasn’t come home.  Not long ago, Narendra Modi called Amarinder Singh a "swatanter fauji," someone who the Congress does not control.

Till 24 hours ago, Sidhu was being seen as Amarinder Singh's successor who was being anointed by Rahul Gandhi. The party was ignoring his wife, Navjot Kaur’s utterances against senior Punjab leadership. Now, political wilderness stares the Sidhus in the face.

A report in the Punjab Today, a day before the results, had predicted that post-results, Punjab will see the launch of an Exit Poll within the Congress against Navjot Singh Sidhu if the results were to go in favour of Amarinder Singh. It is quite possible, given Sidhu’s temperamental nature, that he may press the Exit button on his own. It might be Amarinder Singh’s turn to say — Thoko Taali.

ABHI NA THOKO TAALI – REAL EXIT POLL ON MAY 23 AFTER RESULTS

As two women wait with baited breath, Punjab all set for mummy of all exit polls on May 23 evening
21.05.19 - S Pal
As two women wait with baited breath, Punjab all set for mummy of all exit polls on May 23 evening

FOR ANOTHER 24 hours, Punjabis will be on tenterhooks, trying to read the straws in the wind to decipher how many of the 13 Lok Sabha seats the Congress will win, and how many will fall in the Shiromani Akali Dal's kitty.

But is that the most important question to ask? Of course, the number of seats the SAD-BJP combine wins or Congress bags is important, but a much bigger electoral bomb could be ticking in the state, at least as long as the EVM machines stay sealed.

In the end, it could just be a damp squib and we will be back to asking the standard question — how many seats for the Congress and how many for the SAD-BJP? But if, by some quirk of fate and voters' doing, there is any major upset in Bathinda or/and Patiala, the rest of the numbers game may lose all meaning.

Irrespective of how many seats Akali Dal wins, Harsimrat Kaur Badal must win Bathinda for the Badals to remain relevant to the electoral outcome debate. That would, incidentally, also mean the defeat of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Priyanka Gandhi and the self-inflicted "political death" of Manpreet Singh Badal.

Irrespective of how many seats the Congress party wins, Preneet Kaur must win Patiala, failing which we should rush to hog the ring side seat in Punjab politics to watch the dirtiest, ugliest slugfest between Moti Mahal and the House of Navjot Kaur/Singh Sidhus.
-------------
If Harsimrat Badal wins, it will be defeat of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Navjot Singh Sidhu, while Raja Warring will be an inconsequential casualty. If she loses, any good show by the Akali Dal will not matter, nor will be imagery of Modi bowing before Badal Sr., and no credit of Congress win in Bathinda will go to Amarinder Singh.
-------------
Any major jolt to the political career of these two women has more potential to push the state's politics into a tailspin than the relative seats or vote share of the Congress and the Akali Dal.

In a scenario where Preneet Kaur loses, even the defeat or victory of Sunil Jakhar, pitted against that handpump master bricoleur "Sunny What’s-a-Balakot Deol” will seem lesser news. A defeat of Harsimrat Kaur Badal could force party president Sukhbir Singh Badal to cede more space to second rung leaders and those who he could earlier afford to ignore.

Any adverse result in Ferozepur for the Akali Dal would be an even bigger political explosion, and would look as the final cataclysm after the blows the party has been suffering in the wake of not doing enough to bring to book those guilty of committing sacrilege.

Of all the escape routes and exit plans that CM Amarinder Singh might have formulated in case the results go way too below the Mission 13 bar that he set for himself, not one will be available to him in case his wife fails to retain Patiala. Blaming it on Sidhu might not cut much ice in that scenario, just as no Ghalib verse could come to Manpreet Badal’s aid if Raja Warring bites the dust.

Also, a defeat of Jakhar at the hands of Sunny Deol in Gurdaspur could actually prove far too costly for Amarinder Singh because it will remove the one big buffer between the CM and the wanna-be CM, Navjot Singh Sidhu. A negative result in Gurdaspur could mean Navjot Singh Sidhu claiming an even wider turf in Punjab politics and move more threateningly and tentalisingly close to the CM's chair.

Just imagine the Sidhu'isms that will rain for the benefit of whirring cameras and suckers-for-byte journos — Oh Guru...Thoko Taali!

After May 23, will Punjab see an Exit Poll before bye-elections? Five ministers have already cast Exit Sidhu vote.

As of now, five ministers have already asked Sidhu to exit his ministry. Sidhu, they say, is no match for Amarinder Singh, and certainly not friendly.

Minutes after Punjab finds out the final tally on May 23, it will see the launch of the mother of all exit polls: whether Amarinder Singh ensures Sidhu falls in line or exits the scene, or Sidhu mounts a campaign to ensure that Amarinder Singh makes the exit and leaves the coveted chair to him.

After all, Sidhu lost his money-making richly upholstered king-size chair at the set of a television comedy show and is out looking to snatch a Maharaja-size perch. The moment of reckoning is 24 hours away and Punjab will find out who is guru and who will thoko taali! For someone, it’ll be the last laugh.

Tidal wave against Cong govt in Punjab: Sukhbir

Tidal wave against Cong govt in Punjab: Sukhbir

Jalalabad May 4 - The Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal said here today that in just two years, the Amarinder govt in Punjab "has put the state back by two decades and it would take a major effort to undo the damage which Amarinder has been doing to the state.

"Captain Amarinder Singh wasted all his own and the state's   time by remaining lost in leisure and pleasure, paying no heed to the sufferings and needs of the common people. He has undone the fruits of hard work for the people of the state. "Aseen tinnka tinnka ikathha kar ke Punjab nu sanvaaria. Ehna ne do saalaan vich teela teela kar k rakh ditta" said the SAD president, adding that as the Punjabis felt cheated by Amarinder, the Congress is up against a tidal wave of Punjabi anger.

"As a result, there is total chaos in Congress party in Punjab. Shocked by the intensity of this wave , most Cong leaders are running away from the field or keeping a low profile," said Badal.

The SAD chief said that instead of taking responsibility for the Congress disaster as a good General , Amarinder was passing the blame to juniors. "Impending defeat has thrown the Congress in complete disarray," said the Akali leader.

Badal's observations came in the course of his speeches  at huge and enthusiastic gatherings in villages Ghubaya, Halim Wali/Roraan Wali/ chakk  Janisar, Paaliwala , Baahmani Wala, Ladhu ka , Bagge ke Mod and Jalalabad in the Ferozepur Lok Sabha Constituency from where he is contesting  as an SAD BJP candidate"

The Akali supremo also came down heavily on the government for putting the farmers through harassment and humiliation at the Mandi. There is an acute shortage of gunny  bags resulting in glut and shortage of space because of which procurement is progressing at a snail's pace. Farmers are also being put through exploitation on discolouring of grains.

Badal said that the people of Punjab were paying the price of trusting Amarinder's words.  "They trusted  him because he swore by the sacred charan of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji. No one could believe that someone could tell lies even after an oath by the Dashmesh Pita's sacred charan ," said Mr Badal , adding that he could understand the people's decision as some his own party men also found it difficult to suspect the sincerity of such an extraordinary oath.  "But Amarinder had other ideas.  He knew he had told big lies. That is why in the first week after being sworn in as CM , he declared that he would never contest an election again in his life. This meant that there was nothing the people could do to harm him. "

"No wonder the Punjabis feel cheated and are determined to teach Amarinder a lesson in these Lok Sabha elections," said the Akali supremo.

Badal said that the results of the Lok Sabha poll in Punjab will clear the decks for the return of the SAD BJP government in Punjab.

"We will turn the border belt of the state into an industrial zone with focus on textile industry. And the industry we will bring will have a balance between labour intensive and tech-intensive approach in order to give a fillip to employment for the Punjabi youth.  We started the focus on diversifying the state economy and things had started looking up. All the big business and industrial houses of the country and some with a strong global presence like Lakshmi Mittal had started the process of setting up bases in Punjab.  However, in the past two years, Captain Amarinder Singh has found no time to convene even a single meeting to review and clear industrial proposals. "

The Akali chief said that he could not understand why the Amarinder govt was complaining of empty coffers despite halting all development projects and welfare initiatives started by the SAD.

Modi’s nuke statement ‘highly irresponsible’; LS polls a ‘Jung’ for India’s future: Amarinder

Jalandhar, April 22: Lambasting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "highly irresponsible statement” on India’s nuclear arsenal, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday appealed to the people to support the Congress party’s ‘jung’ for protecting the future of the nation, which the BJP-led government at the Centre had plunged into a state of ruin and devastation.

Kickstarting the process of filing of nominations by Congress candidates in the state from Jalandhar, where he accompanied Punjab Congress candidate Santokh Singh Chaudhary to file nomination papers at the District Administrative Complex, the Chief Minister told mediapersons that the prime minister’s threat to trigger a nuclear war, clearly as a tool to be re-elected, was highly responsible.

The Chief Minister was accompanied, among others, by former Jalandhar MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee, whose house he visited before proceeding to the District Administrative Complex. "He (Kaypee) is a senior leader, an old Congressman who will be campaigning wholeheartedly for the party,” he said, rejecting any anger on the part of the ex-MP. Cabinet minister Sunder Sham Arora and ex-minister Rana Gurjeet Singh also accompanied the chief minister, along with a large number of party workers and supporters.

"This is a jung for the future of the nation. We are fighting a party that made tall promises but failed to deliver on even a single one of them,” the Chief Minister later said, addressing a public meeting at the PUDA grounds here. He lashed out at the BJP for ruining the nation with its anti-people policies, such as demonetization, GST etc.

Pointing out that unemployment rate was at an all-time high, Captain Amarinder ridiculed Modi’s promise of `achche din’, saying "acche din us din aange jis din enna da bhog payega” (good days will come only when their rule is brought to an end).

People are sick and tired of their ‘jumlas’ and lies, said the Chief Minister, adding that people want jobs, industry etc. The people of India will overthrow the Modi government, which has spent the last five years misleading and lying to them, he said.

Flaying the prime minister for his blatant and shameful politicization of the armed forces, the Chief Minister said the Army and the forces are not Modi’s personal property and any government of the day would have done what he did in the wake of the Pulwama attack. Every day, army and paramilitary personnel are dying in the line of duty, and yet the prime minister has the audacity to take credit for their actions, he added.

The Chief Minister came down heavily on the BJP for giving a ticket to Sadhvi Pragya, who has been openly going around making divisive and hate speeches, and insulting the men in uniform. "Such people are deliberately being given tickets by BJP in order to divide the people of India,” he said, asserting that the people would not allow the ruling party to destroy the nation’s peaceful fabric to promote their petty political interests.
-----------
Captain Amarinder ridiculed Modi’s promise of `Achche din’, saying "Acche din us din aange jis din enna da bhog payega
-----------
The government’s job is to ensure the welfare of the people, not divide them, said Captain Amarinder, adding that the government must understand and work towards mitigating the problem of the people.

The Congress in Punjab, he pointed out, was continuously working for the betterment of the people and working for upliftment of all sections of the society. He cited the examples of farm loan waiver for 10.25 lakh marginal and small farmers, as well as landless labourers, and the facilitation of youth to get employment/self-employment as part of his government’s flagship ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar aur Karobar’ scheme.

Unfortunately, the government cannot give jobs to everyone and was trying, therefore, to get more and more industry and private enterprise into the state for the creation of employment opportunities, the Chief Minister said. He indicated the establishment of an industrial circle in Jalandhar to bring in new industries and promote further industrial development.

With today’s nomination papers being filed, the Congress had given a further impetus to its Mission13, Captain Amarinder said, adding that the pace would be enhanced with two nominations being filed per day beginning tomorrow.

MATTERS OF RELIGIOUS IMPORTANCE
Amarinder slams Modi for discriminating against Punjab

Amarinder slams Modi for discriminating against Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of serious discrimination against the Congress government in Punjab in matters of religious importance, as part of his and his party’s divisive agenda.

Upping the ante against Modi, who had on Sunday chosen to target him in a speech at Kathua, Captain Amarinder asked why the prime minister had not pointed fingers at the Akali leaders’, including the Badals, for failing to attend the central government function to commemorate the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

Neither Prakash or Sukhbir Badal, nor Harsimrat Badal, who happens to be a minister in Modi’s own cabinet, deemed it fit to pay their homage to the martyrs at the historic Jallianwala Bagh, the Chief Minister pointed out. Yet Modi, who himself chose to keep away from this occasion of national importance, had criticized him even though he had been part of a series of events at the Jallianwala Bagh national memorial over two days, said the Chief Minister, lambasting the prime minister for his selective and politically motivated attack.

"Why was Mr Modi not present at this major event? Why did the Badals fail to turn up, and why did the prime minister chose to conveniently ignore their absence?,” asked the Chief Minister, in a hard-hitting statement.

Interpreting Modi’s actions and words as part of his government’s persistent discrimination against the Congress government in Punjab, Captain Amarinder said by holding a parallel event to mark the Jallianwala Bagh centenary, instead of supporting the state government’s commemorative programmes, the prime minister had exposed his true intent.

Captain Amarinder said there was a clear pattern in Modi’s attack on him on the Jallianwala Bagh issue, which the central government had been brazenly and shamelessly trying to politicize to woo the Punjabi community and further his political ambitions. The community, however, was not likely to be taken in by such petty acts of omission and commission, he added, urging the prime minister to come out with a constructive agenda to garner votes in the state.

Punjab, with a strong Congress government at its helm, posed a serious challenge to Modi’s ambitions, making it a target of his unsavoury and petty assaults, said Captain Amarinder. The prime minister’s continuous refusal to make funds available for the 550th Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, scheduled to be celebrated in November this year, was in line with his partisan approach, he added. The Chief Minister said he would not be surprised if the Modi government had planned a separate event to mark the Prakash Parv also, in an effort to score one-upmanship on this most significant occasion.
------------
Why was Mr Modi not present at this major event? Why did the Badals fail to turn up, and why did the prime minister chose to conveniently ignore their absence?
------------
Modi had been persistently trying to undermine the Congress-led governments in various states in a desperate bid to win the Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP was clearly on slipper ground, he added.

Describing Modi as a barefaced credit-seeker, Captain Amarinder said the prime minister had exposed himself on this count again and again, with the Kartarpur Corridor foundation laying ceremony in November last year another case in instance. In fact, the Chief Minister pointed out, it had been a habit with the incumbent BJP-led government at the Centre to try and usurp the credit for various initiatives and development works launched or undertaken by previous regimes.

The prime minister, said Captain Amarinder, had no positive plank to take to the voters in these elections and was thus resorting to such credit wars in the desperate hope that he would be able to sway the electorate by misleading them in this manner. The people of Punjab, and in fact the entire nation, had seen through these frantic tactics of the prime minister and would mercilessly and unceremoniously throw his government out of power, he added.
