Why Punjab is opposing CAA and the NRC
30.12.19 - Rajeev Khanna
Why Punjab is opposing CAA and the NRC

THE DISTRUST for the Centre is such in Punjab that a large section of Punjabis have been sporting stickers and even number plates in Gurmukhi on their vehicles. While this was to oppose the slogan of ‘one nation-one language’, the average Punjabi was vociferous in his opposition to the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories.

Who knows if the BJP one day will not trifurcate Punjab into Malwa, Majha and Doaba, they sneered. And although Punjab has a very small percentage of Muslims in the state, Punjabis and the Sikhs have been vocal in their opposition to amendments brought into the Citizenship Act, which exclude Muslims from neighbouring countries from Indian citizenship.

The olive branch and the several placatory moves made by the Centre have cut no ice till now. While the amendments ensure that Sikhs from Pakistan and Afghanistan would be eligible for Indian citizenship, unlike Muslims from these two countries and Bangladesh, the Punjabis are not impressed.

The Centre’s overture in scrapping the ‘Black List’ of 312 Sikhs, once dubbed as separatists and terrorists living abroad, release of eight Sikh prisoners ahead of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev in November and media reports on commuting the death sentence of Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was convicted for former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination (though Amit Shah’s recent statement in Parliament has once again created much confusion on the issue) have been taken with a pinch of salt.

The sentiment of the people residing in Punjab is of utmost importance, given the fact that it now remains the only full-fledged state in the Union of India where a minority religious group is in a majority. Earlier the state of Jammu and Kashmir shared this distinction with Punjab.

Secondly, it is a state bordering Pakistan, a country with which tensions continue to escalate off and on. Thirdly, Punjab’s contemporary history cannot be ignored in the context of the dark days of militancy that it witnessed.

Interactions with political activists, poets and writers, farmers and others reveal that they look upon the alliance of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) with the BJP with suspicion. Besides the deep-rooted suspicion and distrust with the RSS and the BJP in the state, they wonder how federalism, which SAD (Badal) has always espoused, can be reconciled with BJP’s agenda.

Significantly, Punjab is also witnessing widespread protests against the citizenship amendment law and the threat of NRC. This despite the protection extended to the Sikhs along with the Hindus in the amendment and in spite of the categorical assertion by the chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh that it would not be implemented in the state. Muslims, who are at the receiving end of the amendments, also constitute a microscopic minority in the state.

Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh (in pic) says, "Sikhs can see through the characteristic game being played by the Centre of appeasing one community while targeting the other. The Centre is disturbed by the fact that the Sikhs have stood up for Kashmiri neighbours and are doing the same for Muslims.”

There is a common refrain that if it is Muslims at the receiving end at this point of time, there can be some other minority tomorrow. "The amendment is the Chor Darwaza for implementing their agenda. Tomorrow if they do not like Buddhists or Christians or any other minority, they will be singled out,” explains Maulana Mohammad Usman Ludhianvi.

Dal Khalsa in a statement underlined that any law that targets one particular religion was bad in law and also bad in faith and taste.

Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh participating in protest against CAA/NRC

Professor Manjit Singh (Retired), a sociologist, says, "Can you imagine the confusion and chaos the processes of CAA and NRC can cause in a state like Punjab, where there is a large presence of migrant labour? It also needs to be understood that these are issues that can be exploited by the separatist elements.”

It is the sentiment of the masses that perhaps compelled BJP’s ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal, also to speak out. The party had welcomed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) with the rider that Muslims be included in it. Then, on the occasion of its 99th anniversary, it announced its ‘rededication to the setting up of ‘a genuinely secular and federal India based on the principles of peace, communal harmony and equal rights and respect for all citizens, regardless of their religion, caste, creed , language, state or region’.

The party’s resolution passed on December 14 read, "SAD stands for greater fiscal and political autonomy to all states as strong states mean a strong country.” The common man is questioning how the SAD wants to achieve these objectives while continuing its alliance with the BJP.

NATIONALISM VS SECULARISM
Hindus and Indians: Why this conflict?
27.12.19 - Harcharan Bains
Hindus and Indians: Why this conflict?

FORGET ABOUT ALL Indians being Hindus, not even all Hindus are Indians.

There are over 3.3 million Hindus in Pakistan who are as loyal to their country as the Muslims there. They have have had Hindus as legislators, MPs, even federal ministers who are as vocal against India as the Muslim leaders in India like Owaisi are against Pakistan.

Incidentally, Asaduddin Owaisi has repeatedly told the Pak government and their media intellectuals to shut up on the issues of Indian Muslims, telling them that the Indian Muslims may have problems in India but they deem themselves far superior to the Pak Muslims in social and economic status. Owaisi never forgets to tell Pak establishment that they should mind their own business.

Owaisi is not the only Muslim who has differences with the Government of India but takes a firm stand on his patriotic credentials while addressing Pak allegations against India on the Muslim issue. india's best defense and the most befitting response against all such allegations by Pakistan is always given by Owaisi and other Indian Muslim leaders. For some reason, this fact is seldom highlighted by several sections of the Indian media.

Talking about all Hindus not being Indians, the only Hindu nation/country in the world is Nepal and Nepal often enjoys better ties with China than with India while Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE have often stood strongly by India even in conflicts with Pak, including on the Kashmir issue.

Only three Muslim countries, Malaysia, Turkey and Iran criticised the recent Indian move on Art 370. In fact, Iran confined itself to the human rights aspect of the problem.

As for the non-Indian Hindus, even Sri Lankan Tamilian Hindus have often not preferred India over Pakistan in their diplomatic dealings.

As for the RSS view on every Indian being a Hindu, if this definition is indeed accepted by the BJP, then it may find it difficult to distinguish between the Hindus and the Muslims from the erstwhile India - - Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan - for the purpose of CAA.

Honestly, I don't know how those Muslims would be treated differently from the Hindus and kept out of the ambit of the CAA.

Thus, to me at least, the RSS view does not seem to favour the BJP stand on keeping Muslims from those three countries out of the scope of the CAA, because, going by the RSS definition, even these Muslims will have to be regarded as Hindus.

Will someone please enlighten on me this?

Let me reiterate that generally speaking, the Hindus are instinctively among the most secular people under the sun, and massive doses of propaganda and indoctrination is required to communalise them. One of the many pieces of evidence for this is the Constitution of India which the entire world recognsies as genuinely secular.

At the time the Constitution was adoptd 80% of India was Hindu and yet they opted for making India a secular country, rather than a Hindu nation.

Not that there aren't any rabid communal voices among the Hindus and not that there has not been a massive campaign to communalsie the Hindu population in the recent past, but it is my firm belief that the spirit of this country favours moderation and secularism. This has been proved over and over again, despite temporary aberrations in the past - both distant and recent. The basic and historical Hindu mindset and view of life have a lot to do with this.

JHARKHAND JHATKA
Arrogance of power has its limits
25.12.19 - VIPIN PUBBY
Arrogance of power has its limits

MOST YOUNG readers may not recall an infamous slogan coined by former Congress president Dev Kant Barua during the emergency when the then prime minister Indira Gandhi was at the peak of power. He had declared that "India is Indira and Indira is India”.

Indira Gandhi surrounded by Congressmen, Parliament House, in New Delhi in 1967.

A power drunk and over-confident Indira Gandhi, who has imposed the emergency in 1975, decided to lift it with the conviction that the people of the country would re-elect the Congress with a resounding victory under her leadership. The party was knocked out of power after the emergency was lifted in 1977.

Although Jan Sangh, erstwhile avatar of Bharatiya Janata Party, was part of the Janata Party government which wrested power, the party appears to have forgotten the lessons from history. While it exercised some restraint during its first five years of rule, it has gone berserk since its reelection with even a larger majority earlier this year.

BJP is in a hurry to thrust its agenda despite widespread protests and even the fact that nearly  two thirds of those who voted in the Lok Sabha elections had voted against the party.

Even as protests were raging throughout the country over the Citizens Amendment Act and the declared intention of it to be followed by the National Register of Citizens, prime minister Narendra Modi remained incommunicado for several days.

In fact he also mysteriously absented himself when his home minister Amit Shah was piloting the controversial legislation in Parliament.

His speech at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on Sunday too left many questions unanswered. While he claimed that the National Register of Citizens had not even been discussed, several top leaders of the party had been claiming otherwise. He did not categorically ruled it out and didn’t even offer to review or to hold further discussions on the issue.

In his now familiar attack on so-called urban naxals, a term he and his party uses liberally to paint anyone criticising the government, he took pot shots at the opposition for its intentions. He has no word of sympathy for the young men killed during the protests. Rather he again diverted the issue to say that the intention was to "unseat Modi” from power.

While Amit Shah and several other leaders have repeatedly said on record that the CAA and NRC were linked, Modi said these were not. His statement led to reversal of their earlier stand.

Now to further complicate the issues, the government has announced a go ahead for updating National Population Register (NPR).

While Amit Shah has asserted that NPR was not linked with NRC, a section of media has quoted at least nine instances where he and his cabinet colleagues have said on record in the past to say that information provided in NPR would be used for NRC.

Modi, who has maintained an unenviable record of not taking any questions from the media (perhaps the only leader in the world from any democratic country to do so), likes to conduct a one sided dialogue while addressing public rallies or conveying his "mann ki baat”.

Large segment of media, as is well known, has surrendered and is aptly called the "godi media”. It is a common sight to see senior television journalists, who are favoured by Modi and Amit Shah with ‘exclusive’ interviews, taking all humiliation and insults by them in their stride and even with a smile.
Watch video:

Just as the top two leaders don’t like any criticism, their die hard supporters pounce upon any criticism from any quarter. They remain vigilant about any criticism of their masters and use the choicest abuses and crude language in an attempt to slam the critics.
The general attitude of the leaders has percolated down to the middle rung and junior leaders. During the campaign for assembly elections earlier this year, one of such leaders was on video claiming that his party would know who had voted in its favour and who has not.

A couple of days back a Haryana BJP MLA, Lila Ram Gujjar, was on record saying it was "Modi’s Hindustan... and clean up could be done within an hour”. He did not leave much to guess what kind of ‘cleaning’ he was referring to when he said "Miyanji, ab yeh Hindustan Modi ji ka hai. Agar ishara ho gaya na, ek ghante ke andar safai kar denge”.

The freedom given to such leaders to say anything, who might have been even encouraged to do so, is a reminder of the slogan coined by Dev Kant Barua for Indira Gandhi. They think that any criticism of the government is an attempt to weaken the country and is unpatriotic. For them there is no distinction between the government and the nation. Thus those who criticise Modi government are no less than traitors.

The outcome of the recent elections in five states must ring a warning bell that voters can’t be taken for granted. A course correction and ability to take criticism would do good for the BJP as well as for the country.

CAA & NRC
For all its failures, BJP has found a scapegoat in the Indian Muslims
18.12.19 - Markandey Katju
For all its failures, BJP has found a scapegoat in the Indian Muslims

I regret to say this, but I must speak the truth: bad days are coming for the 200 million Indian Muslims (see my article ‘Wake up India, Dark Days Ahead!’)

Consider the facts:

1. About 80% of the Indian population is Hindu, and most Indian Hindus have become highly communal and polarized (i.e. anti Muslim), particularly after the BJP came to power in 2014. In their eyes, most Muslims are fanatics, anti national and terrorists. So when a Muslim is lynched by so called Gau-rakshaks (cow vigilantes) most Hindus are indifferent, and some even happy. One terrorist less.

Muslims are painted as seducers of Hindu girls (called love jihad).

In many schools, Hindu children tell their Muslim classmates that Muslims are terrorists and should go to Pakistan. They ask them whether their fathers manufacture bombs.

From my personal experience I can say that when I am with my Hindu relatives and friends, and they are sure no Muslim is present, they often spout venom on Muslims.

States like West Bengal, which were bastions of secularism, have become highly polarized. In part this was due to Mamata Banerji’s Muslim appeasement policy (e.g. announcing Rs 25,000 p.m. salary to the imams of each of the 30,000 mosques in the state, and Rs 15,000 to each of the muezzins, which was struck down by the Calcutta HC).

Mamata thought that this way she could keep the 28% Muslims in her pocket, but she drove most of the 70% Hindus towards the BJP. The same may happen in Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, etc.

Even in the Bay Area of California, where I am staying presently, the NRI community has become highly polarized.

2. It is not that there was no communalism prior to 2014 when the BJP came to power. Secularism is a feature of industrial society, not of feudal or semi feudal society. In India the feudal economy was largely destroyed after Independence by the zamindari abolition laws and the growth of a limited degree of industrialization. But the feudal mindset and practices have continued even after  Independence, as is evident from the rampant casteism and communalism prevalent in India even today. So India can be called a semi-feudal country.

What has happened after the  BJP came to power in 2014 is this: Whereas earlier communalism was largely latent and erupted only occasionally, now it has become open, virulent, and continuous.

This is because the BJP thrives on communalism. It knows that the 15% Muslims of India will always vote against it, so it seeks to unite the 80% Hindus and bring them under its fold.

Hindus are normally divided on caste lines, but they can be united by fanning hatred against Muslims, and this is what the BJP does, e.g, by hate speeches against them, demonising them as fanatics, terrorists, anti nationals and cow killers, and by instigating communal riots.

When recent agitations started against CAB, Modi said in a speech in Jharkhand that the agitators all wore a certain dress, insinuating the Muslims (though in fact in Assam all Assamese were demonstrating against CAB, not just Muslims).

A former BJP Union Minister garlanded alleged lynchers, and a present Union Minister called Muslims ‘haraamzadas’ (bastards).

3. The Indian institutions have been ‘saffronised’, including the Supreme Court, as is evident from its disgraceful Ayodhya verdict, its  treatment of Justice Kureshi, etc, and the ‘Hinduisation’ of history and science. All this bodes ill for Indian Muslims.

4. The Indian economy is tanking, with GDP dipping, manufacturing in steep decline (e.g. sales in auto sector declining by 30-40%), real estate sector in dumps, as is IT sector etc and record unemployment. 12 million youth are entering the Indian job market every year, but the number of jobs has declined.

At the same time prices of vegetables and fuel have skyrocketed, farmers distress escalated, and child malnourishment increased (about 50% Indian children are malnourished as per reports of Global Hunger Index and UNICEF, and 50% Indian women are anaemic). Proper healthcare and good education are almost non existent for the Indian masses.

This was precisely the situation in Italy in 1922 and in Germany in 1933 when fascist governments took over.

5. The BJP government has no inkling how to resolve the terrible economic crisis which has gripped India, so it has taken recourse to the time tested method of finding a scapegoat, and it has found it in the Indian Muslims. Just as Jews were blamed for all the evils in Germany by the Nazis, Muslims will be blamed (and are being blamed) for all the evils in India.

6. I do not believe that there will be a Holocaust of Indian Muslims as happened in Europe, as they are too many to send to gas chambers, and India lacks the technology of the Germans, but short of that many terrible atrocities will be committed on them, like their massacre in Gujarat in 2002.

Bad days are ahead for Indian Muslims

NRC, CAB & THE CONSTITUTION
Who Are The Real Termites Eating Up India?
11.12.19 - Justice Markandey Katju
Who Are The Real Termites Eating Up India?

HOME MINISTER Amit Shah has called Bangladeshi immigrants ’deemak‘ or termites.

However, in my opinion it is the BJP which is the real deemak eating up the country by its policy of spreading communal hatred, polarizing society, oppressing and terrorizing minorities, suppressing democracy and neo-fascist behavior.

The Constitution of India proclaims India to be a secular democracy, with the fundamental right of freedom of speech, equality, liberty, and the right to practice any religion, etc given to all.

But the ground reality today is very different. Ever since the present rulers have come to power in 2014 democratic freedoms and secularism have been thrown to the winds (see my article ‘Why celebrate Republic Day when the Constitution has become a scarecrow’ online).

India is a country of tremendous diversity, and so can remain united only if equal respect is given to all religions, communities and sects.

However, the brand of Hindutva being practiced today by our rulers, of oppressing minorities and suppressing democratic freedoms, goes against the very identity and nature of India ( see my article ‘What is India’ online), and is therefore the path taking us to disintegration of our nation and total ruin. This is obvious from the following:

1. Lynching of Muslims by cow vigilantes, beating them up for not saying ‘Jai Shri Ram’, hate speeches against them by BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders, propaganda depicting them as fanatics, terrorists, anti-national and foreigners, etc.

2. ‘Saffronisation’ of most institutions in India, including the Supreme Court, which though set up as a guardian of the fundamental rights of the people, has surrendered before the political masters as evident from its shameful Ayodhya verdict, treatment of Justice Kureshi, refusal to uphold democratic rights of Kashmiris, refusal to quash the proceedings against the Bhima Koregaon accused on the basis of the Brandenburg test, etc.

3. ‘Modification’ of most of the media which have shamelessly followed in the footsteps of Dr. Goebbels and Lord Haw Haw and prostrated themselves before the ruling party.

4. Perversion of history and science, following the lead of a PM who talks nonsense by saying ancient Indians knew head transplant surgery and genetic engineering.

5. Reign of terror, as voiced by Rahul Bajaj and many others. People, especially minorities, are living in fear.  There is frequent and arbitrary use of sedition and preventive detention laws

6. Disastrous economic policies that have led to a steep decline in GDP, the sharp downturn in manufacturing (e.g. auto sector), real estate, IT, etc, record unemployment and skyrocketing vegetables and fuel prices. The Indian economy is tanking. Even Moody’s has downgraded us.

The Govt has no inkling how to resolve this terrible economic crisis, so to divert attention it must resort to gimmicks like Yoga Day, Swatchata Abhiyan, constructing Ram Mandir, Cow Protection, abrogation of Article 370, and now CAB.

It must also have a scapegoat to blame for all evils, as Hitler depicted the Jews, and in India these are the Muslims who have been demonized, discriminated against, and persecuted.

The deemak, like a Bhasmasur, is eating us up from within.
