John Muir, a famous Scottish environmental philosopher once said, "God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools”.
It is us, the fools that have destroyed our environment and it is from us that it needs protection. Saving the environment should be our biggest priority right now. Because by destroying the environment we are destroying our very own future. Celebrating Environment day is a small but a positive step towards saving the environment.
World Environment Day is a campaign celebrated annually on 5th of June to inspire people worldwide to stop negative environmental changes. This campaign was established to focus on environment conditions and encourage people to be the active part of positive changes in the environment on earth in order to ensure the safe future of our planet. It is the single largest celebration of our environment each year and is celebrated by thousands of communities worldwide.
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”
This year India has been chosen as the host country for global World Environment Day celebrations, succeeding 2017 host Canada.
India has chosen the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution” for 2018, which urges governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together and explore sustainable alternatives and urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic polluting our oceans, damaging marine life and threatening human health.
Since its first celebration on 5 June 1974, millions of people across the world have taken part in thousands of events to raise awareness and generate political momentum around growing concerns such as the depletion of the ozone layer, toxic chemicals, desertification and global warming.
So, events range from neighborhood clean-ups, to action against wildlife crime, to replanting forests are involved in this.
"The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved”
The Day has developed into a global platform for taking action on urgent environmental issues, driving change in our consumption habits as well as influencing national and international policy.
But a lot more needs to be done by us. Taking care of environment shouldn’t be a one day thing. We need to work towards it every day. Every day we should try to preserve the environment so that our coming generations also gets a chance to experience the beauty of mother earth and its wonderful nature. As a famous Native American proverb goes, "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” So let’s leave this wonderful gift of nature for our children’s too. Let’s not completely destroy it.
‘Sooner or later, we will have to recognise that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans’,
these words of Evo Morales, President of Bolivia should awake us from slumber.
A famous British architect Richard Rogers said, "The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved”. So on this World Environment Day, I urge people and governments everywhere to overcome indifference, combat greed and act to preserve our natural heritage for the benefit of this and future generations.
