On lumpen India's lust for Gori Chitti Kashmiri girls

Central Krakow is one the prettiest towns in Central Europe. Not only was it the ancient capital of Poland on the trade route, it was also a centre of learning and culture. It houses Sukiennice - Cloth Hall, arguably the first Mall in the world, open plazas, beautiful old churches, synagogues and old Jew quarters. During World War II, this is where Oskar Schindler had his enamel ware factory that employed Jews and saved them from the Holocaust. The beautiful Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Nazi era concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the steel town Nova Huta (now owned by ArcelorMittal) are all a ride away.

A few years back, on my second visit to Krakow, one evening I spotted a horse drawn chariot on the streets. Such chariots are popular among tourists. Yet, this one was different. In it were riding a few men, almost naked. It was being driven by a woman who was trying hard to keep a straight face. One of the men stood up to openly piss on the road.

In disgust I asked a Polish friend what was this about. She told me it was a common weekend feature. Post WW II in the 1940s and post Soviet occupation that ended early 1990s, Poland has been poor and seeks trade and commerce and investments. Krakow is at the centre of so much direct history and it aggressively invites tourists.

Heathrow airport in London advertises beer is cheapest in Krakow. One of the outcomes of this is that punks and youngsters travel all the way from England to host stag parties in Krakow - defiling the town. In bars, in dance halls, I saw near brawls between Polish people and English tourists, often over eve-teasing. The Polish people are supposed to lump it up, not raise a voice, lest they disturb their relations with tourists.

I felt ashamed. Not only for what I was seeing but for the fact that such lumpen people had once ruled not only India but so much of planet earth that the sun never set in their territory. I wondered how did we allow ourselves to be ruled by such uncouth people. It is the same with Prague, another beautiful city which now has 1 million locals and attends to 9 million tourists every year. Or Croatia whose more than quarter economy is based on tourism.

We see that even in our country. For example, in Dharamshala where half of Panjab lands up in summer to beat the heat. In Ladakh where after that movie, tourists have invaded Pangong Tso. In Bandipur forest in Karnataka which now toys with lifting night travel restrictions or building a long flyover and disturb the ecological balance.

In fact, we see such behaviour wherever outsider tourists reach and violate local cultures. This is why I fear the Indian settlers now invading Kashmir.

PS: This is not a comment on all English or all tourists. It is about those who give their people a bad name, like the ones commenting on what interests them in Kashmir - land and women.

Minutes of the House
05.08.19 - AMANDEEP SANDHU
Minutes of the House

About two weeks back, when there was a crises of government in Karnataka, one of those four days, then Speaker Ramesh Kumar literally lashed out at all - Congress, JD (S), BJP and independents.

He said, I paraphrase: ever since I became a Speaker, I removed my name plate from my home, I got the flag on my official car removed, in our home no one even sleeps in the direction of the Vidhan Soudha. ... Now I see this brazen naked dance for power. Strip, strip everyone. I will put everything you say on the minutes of the House.

We know what happened: given the fractured Congress-JD (S) alliance, the resignations, the BJP snatched power in the state. So be it.

As a writer with interest in history as it unfolds, what stayed with me is: I will put everything on the minutes of the House.

Today morning, Vice-President and Chairperson Rajya Sabha, while pushing for a debate on EWS - while announcement of intention to abrogate Article 370 had taken place - again said: I will put your comments on the minutes of the House.

It seems to me that the 'minutes of the House' - the record of witness-hood - is the final frontier of democracy. Whatever leaders from all parties do, they might observe some modicum of decency/indecency when it comes to be entered in the minutes of the House.

What is that stick? Simply this that later historians will weight their conduct.

However, when a government itself is hell-bent on picking and choosing from history to suit its narrative; when knowledge of history plays no role in how politicians appease vote-banks in current times so they can cling to power; when entire generations of voters are being force-fed false histories, what use are the 'minutes of the House'?

We know the ethics of politicians have long since been compromised, but disregard for 'minutes of the House', of witness-hood, signals the end of real and functioning democracy in India. When the nation itself is altered, what scope would any future historian have to come up with an idea of what happened in these times?

For people like me, who are seeing the cookie crumble, we are condemned to witness the breakdown of the nation.
