Arunachal Pradesh Switcheroo: CM, 42 MLAs quit Cong, join People’s Party of Arunachal Pradesh

In an electric development in India’s border state of Arunachal Pradesh, all but one of the 43 MLAs of the ruling Congress, including chief minister Pema Khandu, defected to the People’s Party of Arunachal Pradesh (PPA) on Friday.

This effectively converts the Congress government to a PPA one, which is aligned with the BJP.

Mr. Khandu, who had replaced Nabam Tuki following a dissident campaign in July 2016, paraded 42 MLAs before Assembly Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok, who accepted their joining the PPA, Assembly sources said.

The move would be notified in the Assembly bulletin, formalising the political development that leaves the Congress with governments only in Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram in the northeast.

Khandu became chief minister only two months ago when the Congress was restored to government after a series of twists and turns.

The only MLA remaining with the Congress now is Nabam Tuki, who was replaced as chief minister by Khandu back in July. That was done to stem a rebellion in the Congress ranks.

In the House of 60, Congress had until this development 47 MLAs, the BJP 11 with two Independents. The status of two Congress MLAs is uncertain as they put in their papers before the recent political developments.

"The BJP has nothing to do with this. The Congress shouldn't blame the BJP for its own failure," said Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. He added, "If the chief minister and ministers have to wait for days to meet their own leadership in Delhi, how can they stay in such a party?"

Google says you cannot die from Chikungunya: Delhi health minister

Google says you cannot die from Chikungunya: Delhi health minister

Delhi's Health Minister, Satyendra Jain, relies on Dr Google, it appears. He reiterated on Thursday that chikungunya cannot cause deaths because Google told him so.

Speaking to media, Jain said that Delhiites need not panic and that all they needed to do is to take precautions and go to the hospital only if they experience symptoms of the vector-borne disease.

"People of Delhi have no need to panic. The state government is ready to provide help at all cost. But one should get admitted only if the doctor advises them to do so and not because they are scared,” he said.

Talking about the recent casualties, Jain stated that four of the five deaths had been reported from the same hospital, which made the situation quite suspicious.

"Chikungunya deaths are not happening across the world. Why is it only in a select few Delhi hospitals? And upon enquiry, I have discovered that most of the deaths are of people who were aged and already sick with other ailments,” the minister said.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that no complaints of shortage of medicine or doctors and testing facilities have been reported, adding that the Centre is fully prepared to tackle the crisis.

Nadda said the Centre has held a review meeting about the situation in Delhi and found out that there is an increase in cases of chikungunya in Delhi, whereas the hike in cases of dengue have been reported from West Bengal, Odisha and Karnataka.

Meanwhile, some people in West Bengal have tested positive for malaria as well.

"We today held a review meeting in regard with the upsurge of vector borne diseases. In Delhi, an increase in cases of chikungunya has been reported, and meanwhile, large number of cases of fever has been reported. In West Bengal, Odisha and Karnataka, cases of dengue have been reported. In West Bengal, cases of malaria have been reported", Nadda said.

Nadda also urged the people not to panic and help in pacifying the current upsurge of vector borne diseases.

Another AAP MLA booked for sexual harassment

Another AAP MLA booked for sexual harassment

The Aam Aadmi Party, bogged down by numerous cases against its leaders, was faced with yet another jolt on Saturday after a case of sexual harassment was filed against its Delhi legislator Amanatulllah Khan by his sister-in-law.

The 32-year-old woman has alleged that she was being pressurised by Mr Khan to get into a physical relationship with him, a senior officer at Delhi's Jamia Nagar police station said. She has also accused Mr Khan's brother and her in-laws of torturing her for dowry.

Mr Khan has denied the charges saying that he had "no connection with the woman at all".

A case under IPC sections 354A (sexual harassment), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) was registered against Khan and the woman's husband, said the officer.

Crying foul play, Khan alleged he was being framed in false cases as he is an MLA of Aam Aadmi Party and was exposing corruption in the Waqf Board.

The police case was filed hours after Mr Khan, 42, resigned as Delhi Waqf Board Chairman claiming that he was being framed in 'false charges' of corruption. His office was raided by the anti-corruption branch over an alleged recruitment scam two days ago.

In his resignation letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Mr Khan, who was also a member of the State Haj Committee, said he had "run out of patience" pleading innocence over a number of allegations levelled against him and his family members.

"Some people dislike my honesty and service. I want to be free from all the responsibilities given to me by the government and therefore I tender my resignation from all the posts," Mr Khan said in his letter.

Speaking in the Delhi Assembly on Friday, Mr Khan had defended himself saying he had made the "contractual" recruitment following due procedures. Waqf Board was reeling under shortage of staff which necessitated the appointments, he added.

Although there is no official communiqué in this regard, Kejriwal has reportedly refused to accept his resignation.
In July this year, Khan was arrested for allegedly threatening a 35-year-old woman with dire consequences, but was later granted bail.

The AAP legislator from Okhla constituency also had found himself in the eye of a major controversy in March this year for his alleged hate speech against the Modi government.

AAP, which was formally launched in 2012, is currently embroiled in several controversies.

The latest scandal comes to light, after AAP's social justice minister Sandeep Kumar was sacked a few days ago following a woman's rape complaint against him. The incident came to light after the media got hold of a CD showing the AAP leader in a compromising position with the woman.
