Amarinder decides to send delegation to Meghalaya

Chandigarh, June 15: Urging Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to ensure all necessary steps to provide protection to Punjabi settlers in the North-Eastern state, Captain Amarinder has decided to immediately rush a four-member delegation to the state to resolve the issues concerning the settlers.

The delegation, to be headed by Water Resources Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, will meet the Chief Minister and other concerned people in Meghalaya, an official spokesperson said here on Saturday.

The delegation will include MPs Ravneet Singh Bittu and Jasbir Singh Gill, along with MLA Kuldeep Singh Vaid. DS Mangat, Special Secretary, Planning, has also been directed to accompany the delegation, which the Chief Secretary has been asked to coordinate.

The directions come amid media reports that the settlers have received threats from certain local banned terrorist organizations warning them of dire consequences if they resisted the State Government’s attempts to evict them.

"These reports have naturally caused great concern back in Punjab as these families have been settled in Shillong long before the country’s independence,” said Captain Amarinder Singh in a letter to Sangma requesting him to initiate urgent measures to instill a sense of security among the Punjabi settlers.

Underlining the sensitivity of the issue, the Punjab Chief Minister stressed the need for it to be carefully and amicably resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. He said it was important that the issue not be allowed to acquire a religious or parochial colour.

In his letter, Captain Amarinder Singh referred to the visit to Meghalaya last year by a Punjab delegation headed by Cooperation Minister to meet the Chief Minister on the same issue. The delegation had also met the settlers as well as other officials in the Government and was assured by all quarters that due regard would be taken not to displace them.

I want to thank an awesome medical Doctor in the person of Dr Anthony Gomina, who has made my family proud in trust and urgency, he bought off one of
my kidneys for his patient with awesome amount of money in dollars, after many doctors have scammed me, i came across his email address on the internet as
published by one Dr Anthony patient, thanking him and telling the world on how he came to their rescue financially as a result of buying their kidneys without stress, i quickly applied via the email and in less than a week i met all the requirements, and my half money was like a dream when it came into my bank account before the transplant.
I urge you to contact Doctor Anthony Gomina for your financial awesomeness to come through like mine few months ago. I promised to do this when i eventually scale through and email.

Stop making compromises, raise the flag of secularism, exhorts Mani Shankar Aiyar
04.06.19 - PT Bureau
Stop making compromises, raise the flag of secularism, exhorts Mani Shankar Aiyar

At a time when many in the Congress' senior leadership have been blaming the party's stance on AFSPA and its questioning of the efficacy of Balakot strikes for its sound defeat the hustings, the irrepressible Mani Shankar Aiyar has advocated exactly the opposite: Go all out to defend India's secularism, make no concession to the forces of obscurantism, and challenge the ideology of Hindutva with all your might.

Aiyar's advice, contained in his article published in the Indian Express, is being seen by many as a voice of sanity and one that reflects clarity of purpose.

Significantly, Congress has long stopped making references to Gujarat riots of 2002 and its spokespersons on television news debates still squirm when reminded of the fact that Sonia Gandhi had once called Narendra Modi a "Maut Ka Saudagar."

Aiyar, not given to ambiguity, said, "This is not the time for pious hopes. It is time to sound again the bugle of secular fundamentalism."

He reminded his own party that its alliance partner M K Stalin in Tamil Nadu did not fight under the banner of UPA and instead opted to rename his alliance as the "Secular Progressive Alliance,” only to emerge victorious.

Aiyar, whose relationship with his own party has been less than smooth, effectively said that the Congress leadership will need to decide if it wanted to pursue "bold and uninhibited advocacy and practice of secularism," or was looking for "accommodation with the Hindutvawadis."

He expressed the fear that while so-called secularists were pussyfooting, the Hindutva was all set to embrace the "secularism” of its traditional ideological foes.

Aiyar weighed in on the ongoing public discourse about the future of the Congress and asked whether the saffron side has changed any of its stripes on the question of branding dissenters as "anti-national", the core thoughts and agenda of V D Savarkar and M S Golwalkar, the long-running divisive campaigns like love jihad, ghar wapsi and the lynching of Muslims by self-styled gau rakshaks.

Recalling expert-speak on the 2019 results, Aiyar said Yogendra Yadav has termed it as slide towards "non-theocratic majoritarianism," Pratap Bhanu Mehta called it a "victory for the politics of fear and hate" while Christophe Jaffrelot saw it as the making of an "ethnic democracy.”

Aiyar said it was time Congress went gung-ho on its secular agenda, and deploy a language and strategy that is unambiguous.

Turning the Pakistan angle in Indian politics on its head, Aiyar said it was, in fact, the stance of the Pak-bashing BJP that amounted to taking India "towards the fulfilment of Jinnah’s dream."

"We have lost the secular battle. We must win the secular war," Aiyar wrote. But will Congress pay heed to the advice of a man it doesn't want to touch with a barge pole in election times?

Sonia Gandhi to continue as Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party
01.06.19 - Team PT
Sonia Gandhi to continue as Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party

Sonia Gandhi was once again elected as the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) leader in the first meeting of the newly-elected Lok Sabha Congress MPs in the national capital on Saturday.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposed her name. The suspense is now over whom the chairperson names as the leader of the party in parliament - her son Rahul Gandhi, who wants to step down as the party chief, or another member.

Amid efforts to get him to change his mind about resigning the party post, the Congress has debated the possibility of Rahul Gandhi at least leading the party in parliament.
The Congress is three members short of the figure that would qualify it for the post of the Leader of the Opposition. The rout in the recently held Lok Sabha elections has left the party with 52 lawmakers - marginally higher than the figure of 44 in 2014.

The meeting comes a week after Rahul Gandhi had expressed his desire to quit as Congress president taking moral responsibility of the loss in Lok Sabha elections.
Political circles were abuzz with speculations, with a report in The Indian Express stating that Congress MPs are also likely to select their leader in the Upper House in its first meeting after the constitution of the 17th Lok Sabha.

The position of the Leader of the Congress was occupied by party veteran Mallikarjun Kharge in the last Lok Sabha. Mr Kharge, however, lost the election from Karnataka's Gulbarga -- the first electoral loss for the nine-time legislator and two-term Lok Sabha member.

At the meeting, Sonia Gandhi thanked the 12.13 crore people who voted for the Congress -- pointing out that even in defeat, the party has a sizeable voter base.
In an emotive note, she also thanked Rahul Gandhi "for toiling night and day and taking on the Modi government... raising concerns about all sections of society and helped the party win in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan".

"As we speak, emotional messages are coming for his continuation (as the party chief). The Congress Working Committee met to deliberate the issue and must take steps," she added.

After Saturday's Congress Parliamentary Party meeting, situation in the party may get clearer. The meeting was held in the central hall of Parliament and MPs chalked out its strategy for the upcoming session of Parliament.
