India is World’s Most Dangerous Country for Women: Survey

India is the most dangerous country in the world to be a woman because of the high risk of sexual violence and slave labour, a new survey of experts shows.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation released its results Tuesday of a survey of 550 experts on women's issues, finding India to be the most dangerous nation for sexual violence against women, as well as human trafficking for domestic work, forced labour, forced marriage and sexual slavery, among other reasons.

It is also the most dangerous country in the world for cultural traditions that impact women, the survey found, citing acid attacks, female genital mutilation, child marriage and physical abuse.

The poll was a repeat of a survey in 2011 that found experts saw Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India, and Somalia as the most dangerous countries for women.

Experts said India moving to the top of poll showed not enough was being done to tackle the danger women faced, more than five years after the rape and murder of a student on a bus in Delhi made violence against women a national priority.

"India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women ... rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated,” said Manjunath Gangadhara, an official at the Karnataka state government.

"The (world’s) fastest growing economy and leader in space and technology is shamed for violence committed against women.”

Government data shows reported cases of crime against women rose by 83% between 2007 and 2016, when there were four cases of rape reported every hour.
------
Experts said India moving to the top of poll showed not enough was being done to tackle the danger women faced.
------
The survey asked respondents which five of the 193 United Nations member states they thought were most dangerous for women and which country was worst in terms of healthcare, economic resources, cultural or traditional practices, sexual violence and harassment, non-sexual violence and human trafficking.

The release of the report comes amid mounting public outrage in India, where a series of high-profile rape cases, including two unrelated attacks on girls aged 16 and eight, have forced the issue of sexual violence back onto the national agenda.

In April, thousands of protesters took to the streets to demand stricter protections for women, in some of the largest mass demonstrations held in the country since the rape and murder of a female college student in Delhi in 2012. Attempts to introduce stricter legislation have so far failed to tackle the dangers women face.

In the months following the 2012 case, the central government passed numerous reforms to increase penalties for sexual violence, including extending the length of prison sentences and introducing the death penalty.

But despite the introduction of stricter laws, around 100 sexual assaults are reported to police in the country every day, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, with nearly 39,000 alleged attacks in 2016, an increase of 12% from the previous year.

DIRTY WAR BREAKS OUT BETWEEN SHEKHAR GUPTA & COBRAPOST
Cobrapost editor takes on Shekhar Gupta on the ethics of sting operations
06.06.18 - kanwar manjit singh
Cobrapost editor takes on Shekhar Gupta on the ethics of sting operations

ANIRUDDHA BAHAL, the editor of Cobrapost and the man behind many journalistic scoops, scooped via sting operations, has slammed senior journalist Shekhar Gupta, president of the Editors Guild of India and former editor-in-chief of the Indian Express, for casting doubts over the efficacy of stings as a legitimate journalistic tool.

Reacting to the Cobrapost shocker story on how some of India's top media houses seemed fairly ready to accept humungous amounts of cash to give an utterly communal slant to news stories, manufacture news, publish partisan coverage and breach every known ethical line, Shekhar Gupta had said, "I do not accept stings as journalism."

He also claimed that his own venture, "The Print," had a code of ethics that "firmly bars stings."

In a stinging response (pun incidental), Aniruddha Bahal has not only accused Gupta of applying "dual standards", but even pointed out that Gupta himself had published news stories based on sting operations, and had even hailed sting ops at various points in his career.

But perhaps the unkindest cut of all was Aniruddha Bahal's reminder about the PayTM link.

Cobrapost's sting, codenamed Operation 136, featured a video of Ajay Shekhar Sharma, the senior vice president of PayTM and the brother of its founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma. Bahal explained how the video showed Ajay making "damning disclosures on how PayTM shared their data about users from Kashmir with the prime minister’s office" and also the fact that Vijay Shekhar is an investor in Shekhar Gupta's The Print.
----------
Shekhar Gupta: "I do not accept stings as journalism."
Aniruddha Bahal: Shekhar Gupta is happy to report on CDs that the cat drags in, but has problems when Cobrapost investigates and takes ownership of its stories.
----------
"Gupta published a story on The Print about Pushp Sharma, the journalist who reported the (Cobrapost) story (but) ... included no disclosures about how the investors with The Print were named in the Operation 136 sting," Bahal wrote in his no-punches-pulled piece in Caravan.

He said this flies in the face of the ostensible claim of The Print that talks about "uncompromising standards" to avoid "even the appearance of conflict of interest.”

"Shekhar Gupta’s memory, too, appears to be playing some tricks," Bahal said.

Bahal said The Print carried a story on BJP's B Sriramulu negotiating a bribe with PV Sreenijan, the son-in-law of the former chief justice KG Balakrishnan, based on a sting operation. This sting was released by the Congress ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections. Bahal questions why Shekhar Gupta did not think it appropriate at that time to "comment on the motives of the people who conducted it, or the ethics of the sting operation itself."

Calling Shekhar Gupta’s comment on Cobrapost's Operation 136 as "disingenuous to say the least," Bahal said The Print did not have any problem in reporting about Cambridge Analytica. "It appears that a British company promising to fix elections in Sri Lanka (as revealed in a sting) is of greater news value to Gupta than mainstream TV channels and newspapers doing the same in India."
----------
Cobrapost had released video of brother of PayTM founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma talking about how PayTM shared data about users from Kashmir with the PMO. Vijay Shekhar is an investor in Shekhar Gupta's The Print. Now, The Print has done a story in Cobrapost reporter who carried that sting, but it did not tell readers that PayTM boss is investor in The Print.
----------
As Bahal narrates, Cobrapost's Operation 136: Parts I and II revealed what 43 Indian news platforms, television channels, print publications, radio and online media, were prepared to do in return for compensation from a fictitious religious organisation, including peddling Hindutva ideology, defaming political rivals, and polarising the electorate.

Many of the individuals caught on camera agreeing to do the most reprehensible stuff "were senior sales and management personnel, and in many cases, the owners of the concerned media organisations themselves."

Bahal, in comments clearly directed at Gupta and his ilk, said no media organisation in a Western liberal democracy could survive a story like Operation 136, but in India, "we specialise in going after the messengers instead of the message."

Bahal seemed to have dug deep into the past, fishing out one after the other examples of sting operation based journalism that ran under Gupta's tutelage at the Indian Express as well as at India Today, but the most painful reminder, perhaps, was of the 2003 front-page story in the Indian Express, headlined, "Caught on tape: Union Minister taking cash, saying money is no less than God.”

The Indian Express had published transcripts of the sting showing the then union minister Dilip Singh Judeo accepting cash for granting mining rights in Chhattisgarh to an Australian company.
----------
Aniruddha Bahal: "Shekhar Gupta’s memory, too, appears to be playing some tricks."
----------
Bahal reminded Gupta how the video CD's authenticity was unconfirmed at the time and the fact that the Outlook magazine reported that the Indian Express had maintained that "the source of its report is of marginal importance.”

Bahal also spoke of another CD that he says "mysteriously arrived at Gupta’s doorstep at the Indian Express." This involved Shanti Bhushan's conversation with Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh about Prashant Bhushan's ability to 'manage' a judge.

"It is evident that (Shekhar) Gupta is happy to report on CDs that the cat drags in, but when a media platform such as Cobrapost investigates and takes ownership over the story, he appears to have several problems," Bahal wrote.

Shekhar Gupta is currently the top man at the Editors’ Guild of India which had recently expressed concern over Cobrapost’s expose. Bahal said while the Editors Guild sermonised about the ethics of sting operations, it should know that "its president is a past master at it."

The only problem, Aniruddha Bahal says, is that Shekhar Gupta finds the stings alright "as long as it is done by somebody other than Cobrapost."

BABA VS YOGI?
Patanjali to shift Rs 2000 crore food park from UP, blames Adityanath Govt
06.06.18 - TEAM PT
Patanjali to shift Rs 2000 crore food park from UP, blames Adityanath Govt

Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved Limited said it was relocating its Rs 6,000-crore food park project out of Uttar Pradesh. The firm cited lack of cooperation on part of the state government.

Acharya Balkrishna, Managing Director of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd and co-founder of Patanjali Yogpeeth, tweeted that the mega food park has to be shifted out of the state in wake of Yogi Adityanath-led state government’s disappointing attitude. He also tweeted that the homegrown FMCG major’s aim of improving lives of farmers in the region would remain unfulfilled now after the decision by the government.

"Today I was informed that the central government-sanctioned mega food park had been cancelled... in the holy land of Ram and Krishna, the scheme to bring prosperity to the lives of farmers is incomplete due to the apathy of the state government,” Acharya Balkrishna said. Balkrishna told PTI that Patanjali did not get the required clearances from the state government.

Earlier, Patanjali had said that its Yamuna Expressway-based plant would produce goods worth Rs 25,000 crore annually, if it runs to its full capacity.

It would create 10,000 direct jobs, Patanjali had said.

According to reports, around 455 acres of land was allocated for the Patanjali Food and Herbal Park in Greater Noida and the project was worth around Rs. 2,000 crore.

It was the largest project set up by Patanjali after the one in Haridwar, which is spread over 150 acres.

In 2016, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had laid the foundation of this park.

Company spokesperson SK Tijarawala said they decided to shift the project because the state government was "not in a mood to encourage” them. "The state government does not want farmers of this area to benefit from this project,” he said, according to the Hindustan Times.

Patanjali is presently investing in mega food park projects, including Nagpur (Madhya Pradesh) and Tejpur (Assam).

According to latest reports, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke to yoga guru Ramdev over the phone and ensured Ramdev that the project was on the cards and "minor issues” would be cleared soon. The yoga guru, sources added, was convinced by Yogi Adityanath’s assurances.

Sweet deal?
To woo sugarcane farmers, Govt may announce Rs 7000 crore bailout package
04.06.18 - TEAM PT
To woo sugarcane farmers, Govt may announce Rs 7000 crore bailout package

NEW DELHI, June 5: Concerned over mounting cane arrears to the tune of Rs. 22,000 crore, the government is expected to announce a bailout package of over Rs. 7,000 crore to clear dues of farmers.

A decision in this regard is expected to be taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) scheduled today, the sources added.

Last month, the government had announced a Rs 1,500 crore production-linked subsidy for sugarcane farmers to help millers pay cane payments.

The amount will include creation of buffer stock of 30 LMT (lakh metric tonne), for which the money will be transferred directly to farmers' bank accounts. The minimum price for sale of sugar will be fixed at around Rs.30 a kg. The package is also expected to include a scheme worth over Rs. 4,400 crore for increasing the capacity for production of ethanol, one of the by-products of sugarcane.

Sugar mills are unable to make payments to cane growers as their financial health has worsened due to a sharp fall in sugar prices after a record production of 31.6 million tonne (MT) so far in the 2017-18 season (October-September).

To help a beleaguered sugar industry, the petroleum ministry has proposed interest subsidy of 6 percent on Rs 4,500 crore to sugar mills for expansion and creation of new capacity of ethanol. The scheme provides five years time to mills for repayment of loans and a moratorium on repayment in the first year.

The interest subsidy itself would cost Rs 1,200 crore to the government, the source added. The petroleum ministry is also looking at raising ethanol price so that mills make payment to farmers at the earliest.

Presently, the average ex-mill price of sugar is in the range of Rs 25.60-26.22 per kg, which is below the cost of production.

Cane arrears is seen as the central issue that led to the BJP's loss in the recently concluded crucial by-elections in Kairana, Uttar Pradesh - the largest cane producing state in the country. The issue had become campaign fodder during the recently concluded bypoll. The Lok Sabha constituency alone has six mills where owners owe the farmers an estimated Rs. 800 crores worth of dues.

The state's BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath said it was committed to paying cane dues within two weeks of purchase by the state's sugar mills. But ahead of the elections, many sugar mills put up closure notices. The mill association said the bumper crop was steadily eating into their profit margins.

Maximum cane dues of more than Rs. 12,000 crore are in Uttar Pradesh. India, the second largest producer of sugar after Brazil is home to nearly 50 million cane farmers, mostly in UP, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Further, about 500,000 workers are directly employed by sugar mills.

Punjab Today believes in serious, engaging, narrative journalism at a time when mainstream media houses seem to have given up on long-form writing and news television has blurred or altogether erased the lines between news and slapstick entertainment. We at Punjab Today believe that readers such as yourself appreciate cerebral journalism, and would like you to hold us against the best international industry standards. Brickbats are welcome even more than bouquets, though an occasional pat on the back is always encouraging. Good journalism can be a lifeline in these uncertain times worldwide. You can support us in myriad ways. To begin with, by spreading word about us and forwarding this reportage. Stay engaged.
