Union textile minister Smriti Irani was on Tuesday given the additional charge of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting while Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh was handed over the charge of Urban Development.
The rejig took place after senior party leader and NDA vice presidential candidate Venkaiah Naidu resigned from his ministerial responsibilities on Monday.
Tomar is currently the Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj and Irani is the incumbent Minister for Textiles. In a Cabinet reshuffle in 2016, both the Union Ministers lost their portfolios. Irani was replaced by Prakash Javedekar as the HRD Minister and Piyush Goyal replaced Tomar and was given additional charge of Minister of Mines.
Naidu, who filed his election papers on Tuesday, quit the Modi cabinet hours after he was picked to take on opposition’s Gopalkrishna Gandhi in the August 5 election.
A prominent leader of the BJP, Venkaiah Naidu has also served as its national president from 2002 to 2004. BJP President Amit Shah announced his candidature for the August 5 Vice Presidential election after a 90-minute meeting of the BJP’s Central Parliamentary Board chaired by Shah and attended by top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 68-year-old BJP veteran is expected to sail through as the electoral college comprises 790 parliamentarians from both Houses, where the NDA has a majority with 410 members.
