Election Commission Stalls Release of Modi Biopic

Hours after the censor board cleared the way, the Election Commission has stopped the release of "PM Narendra Modi", a biopic on the Prime Minister, till national elections are over. The film - scheduled for release tomorrow, coinciding with the start of the Lok Sabha polls - "disturbs the level-playing field", the election body said.

The commission said that any such "biopic material in the nature of biography/hagiography sub-serving the purposes of any political entity or individual connected to it, which is intended to, or which has the potential to disturb the level playing field during the elections, should not be displayed in the electronic media including cinematograph during the operation of MCC".

It also said that any complaints on this matter will be examined by a panel headed by a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge.

The Opposition had complained to the poll body against the release of the Vivek Oberoi starrer, saying it was an attempt to influence voters ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by a Congress activist seeking stay on the release of the biopic and said the Election Commission would be an "appropriate” place to seek the redressal.
------
Last week, Vivek Oberoi, who plays PM Modi in the film, headlined the controversy surrounding the biopic after he targeted the Congress, wondering "if they are scared of the film or of Chowkidar's danda".
------
The apex court said it was not entertaining the petition for the stay on the release of the film as it was "premature” since the movie is yet to be certified by the Censor Board.

It said even if the film is released on April 11, as claimed by the Congress activist, it will be appropriate for him to seek a redressal from the Election Commission.

The plea had sought deferment of the biopic’s release till the completion of the coming Lok Sabha polls, alleging that it was designed to "manipulate, influence and impress viewers and voters”.

Last week, Vivek Oberoi, who plays PM Modi in the film, headlined the controversy surrounding the biopic after he targeted the Congress, wondering "if they are scared of the film or of Chowkidar's danda".

The Congress promptly responded, saying it's a "bogus film of a flop hero, a flop producer and is made on a flop person who has proved to be a zero."
