Vinod Khanna’s death has brought an entire era to conclusion. Since news of his demise broke, fans and well wishers are coping with the fact that their favourite actor is actually no more.
Before his death, Khanna was undergoing treatment of gallbladder cancer at Shri HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre. Over time, a number of Bollywood actors and directors had dropped in to visit the ailing veteran.
The film legend and former Member of Parliament breathed his last on Aril 27 at a hospital in Mumbai after succumbing to prolonged illness. Fans, friends, former co-stars and members of film industry poured in their heartfelt condolences on social networking platforms.
One of the actors who was pretty close to Vinod Khanna was Sanjay Dutt. Both actors have appeared together in five films. Recently, Sandeep Singh, who is producing Sanjay Dutt's comeback film Bhoomi, shared an interesting anecdote about the bond Sanju baba and Vinod Khanna shared.
The 'Bhoomi' producer opened up about the visit to a daily saying that Sanjay regarded Khanna as his 'father'. Dutt explained that as he "learned to be a man" apart from many other things from the veteran star.
"Last week, Sanju Sir and I went from Bandra together to meet Vinod Sir at the hospital. We were shooting in South Mumbai, Sanju Sir told me before we started the shoot, ‘I want to first go and see my father (Khanna). I have learned to be a man because of him as he taught me a lot of things.’ When we reached the hospital, Akshaye Khanna came down to receive us. As we entered the room where his family was present, it was like we had entered his home — the entire family was there from his wife Kavitaji, son Saakshi, his brother Pramodji and his sister Shraddha. Akshaye hugged us and asked us to wait while they were asking the doctor for permission to meet Vinod Sir.”
When Sanjay Dutt asked Akshaye Khanna why he did not take his father to the US where both Sanjay's mother and first wife Richa were treated for cancer, Akshaye said that Mumbai's best doctors were looking after his father.
"Doctors were not allowing him to meet anybody, but when Akshaye told him Sanju Sir had come. Vinod Sir said, 'I want to meet my son.' After meeting him for a few minutes, Baba was very quiet. He must have revisited his past again as he had gone through the same with Richa and Nargisji. He hates hospitals and it was traumatic for him to see Vinod Sir so unwell," Sandeep said.
He later told us that Vinod Sir was his idol, and ‘Dad and he were such close friends...’ It was Duttsaab who brought Vinod sir to Mumbai. He saw him in a disco in Delhi and told Vinod sir’s father that he has to act in films.”
Speaking about Vinod's loss, Sanjay said in a statement, "It is saddening to hear of the demise of Vinod Khanna ji. I have watched him as a child and throughout my life was always fascinated by his style and charisma. He was always a thorough gentleman. A big loss to the fraternity. He was and always will be family to the Dutts."
