Another shameful chapter in the Centre-State relations

The recent drama in Kolkata, involving an aborted attempt by a CBI team to question the city’s police head, the team being taken to police station and the subsequent dharna by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, has added another shameful chapter in the centre-state relations emerging out of politics.

The country’s leading investigation agency and the state police were used to what was essentially a political fight between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress. The timing of the action was a clear give away that it was aimed with an eye at the coming general elections. While the Centre initiated the action by sending a CBI team to question the senior most police officer in Kolkata without informing the state government, the chief minister known for theatrics seized the opportunity to gain political mileage out of it.

The action came soon after Mamata Banerjee’s Government declined permission to the BJP chief ...
